SOUTH BEND, Ind. - The IUPUI women's cross country team saw its 5K record obliterated by sophomore Zoey Johnson on Friday (Sept. 30) as the Jaguars ran the Joe Piane Notre Dame Invitational at Warren Golf Course. Johnson notched a time of 17:37.2 to finish 14th in her race, taking nearly 17 seconds off the mark, set at the same meet last season.

Collectively, IUPUI placed 12th of 28 teams in the Gold 5K Race with 316 points. Bradley (103), Notre Dame (171), UTEP (178), Oakland (178) and Northern Iowa (200) made up the top five finishers. Individually, UTEP's Lilian Koech took the individual tape in a time of 17:15.6.

"IU's course didn't give me a good idea of where I was at fitness-wise so I knew today would be a good indication," Johnson said. "In my mind, I definitely had some goal times floating around based on my workouts in practice. I beat my time at this race last year by over 20 seconds, so I could say today was a successful run."

"Zoey did a great job moving up during the race and smashed our school record," Head Coach Antonio McDaniel said. "She's worked really hard and she will only continue to get better."

Johnson was the first of five underclassmen in the Jaguars' scoring five as she was followed by true freshman Katelyn Murphy, sophomores Alexis Lewandowski and Amairany Cruz and rookie Shelby Pake

Murphy ran a time of 18:14.2 in her second collegiate race and Lewandowski finished at 18:15.3. Cruz clocked a time of 18:23.9 and Pake ran a personal best 18:31.3.

"Katelyn ran a much better race this time out and the more she adjusts to college cross country, the better she will get," McDaniel said. "Amairany continues to have an impressive season. Words don't do justice when discussing her work ethic. She's now dropped a minute from her high school PR.

"Shelby had a big PR today. I'm proud of her for bouncing back from a disappointing race at IU. She's very tough for just a freshman."

The Jags' depth was evidenced by the quartet of Savannah Clark, Valeria Guzman, Kelsey Tyler and Haley Welch all going under 19 minutes. Clark ran 18:47.9 and Guzman was just behind her at 18:49.9. Tyler and Welch finished in succession at 18:54.9 and 18:55.3.

In the open race, senior Jennifer Emery ran 18:58.8 placing 44th and Ashley Kidwell ran 19:13.2. The Jags also got quality efforts from Allie Wright and Lauren Osterhout in the open event.

"Ashley Kidwell just keeps impressing me and out entire team," McDaniel said. "This sort of improvement this quickly is tremendous. She set a goal of making top 12 to run at Pre-Nats and I'm thrilled she's now accomplished that goal.

"Lauren PR'd by around a minute today. She's put in some solid training this past month and it's really starting to pay off."

The Jags will be back in action in Terre Haute on Oct. 15 at the Indiana State Pre-Nationals, running against the nation's top teams.
