INDIANPOLIS – Keeping a long-standing streak alive, the IUPUI volleyball team (6-12, 2-1) continued their mastery of the Western Illinois Leathernecks (4-15, 1-3) by defeating the team in straight-sets (25-17, 25-22, 25-18) Friday (Sep. 30) at home. The win pushes the Jags streak to 17-consecutive victories over the Leathernecks, and gives the Jags a winning-record in Summit League play.
Another highlight performance for the standout junior,
Kori Waelbroeck knocked a match-high 15 kills on a .419 attack percentage, pacing the Jaguar offense.
Abby Boatman added eight kills on a .467 clip along with a match-high three total blocks, while
Alexis Mapes tossed 33 assists.
Jessica Helms led the back row with 13 digs, while
Elizabeth Scott had herself another fine outing with 12 digs as of her own. As a team, the Jags hit .229, picking up three blocks while not surrendering a block to Western Illinois. The Leathernecks were limited to a .143 attack percentage.
Waelbroeck led the charge for the Jags early in the action, as the junior leftie came out swinging to the tune of five kills over the first 20 points, as IUPUI held an early 12-8 lead. Waelbroeck would add another pair of kills during a 5-3 stretch, forcing Western Illinois into their second timeout of the first set. Out of the break, IUPUI would break off a 6-1 run, helping them to eventually cruise to a first set victory, 25-17.
It was an even jab-for-jab fight to begin matters in the second set, as the Jags and Leathernecks battled to an 8-8 tie. Kills by Waelbroeck and Boatman slated the Jags to a two-point edge, but errors thwarted the advantage, pitting the Jags to a tie once again at 12-12. Back-to-back errors negated a 4-2 run by the Leathernecks, once again setting the teams in a deadlock. An ace, kill, and an error created a 3-0 run for the Jags, forcing Western Illinois into a timeout. Out of the break, a 6-2 WIU run negated the Jags advantage, dropping IUPUI to a one-point deficit. The momentum seemed to swing when Boatman picked up an emphatic solo block to tie the game, leading the Jags to four-straight points and a set victory, 25-22.
The Jags front row came out swinging to begin the new set, as Waelbroeck, Boatman, and
Logan Walling all picked up kills in the early moments of the third, giving the Jags a big 8-2 advantage. After a timeout, the Leathernecks worked back into the action, igniting a 6-2 run to put them within two of the Jags.
Gabby Fisher would make her presence felt, picking up a kill and a block to help IUPUI build a substantial lead once again, pushing the score to 15-10. With a mission-like attitude, the Jags focused themselves, outperforming the Leathernecks late and sealing the set and match, 25-15.
Before the start of the match, Walling was honored in front of the Jaguar faithful for her accomplishment at the Hoosier Classic Volleyball Invitational two weeks before, as the senior middle blocker became the all-time leader in total blocks at IUPUI. She surpassed Tracy Bailey (375) with her 376th kill, cementing her place in the record books.
With the victory, the Jags move on to face reigning Summit League Champions, the Denver Pioneers, in a Saturday (Oct. 1) night showdown, starting at 6 p.m. EST in the Jungle.
