BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The IUPUI women's cross country team earned a fourth-place finish at Friday's Indiana Intercollegiates in Bloomington, trailing host Indiana, Purdue and Indiana State. The Hoosiers won the six-team race with 23 points, followed by Purdue's 36 and Indiana State's 90. The Jaguars 108 points put them ahead of Ball State and Evansville.
Sophomore
Zoey Johnson led the Jaguars' entries with a 14th-place finish in a water logged time of 19:08.78.
The meet was delayed due to rain and lightning in the area and left the course in a muddy mess.
"Today was very tough with all the delays and course conditions, but that's what you have to deal with in cross country," IUPUI Head Coach
Antonio McDaniel said. "We came up a little short of what our goal was, which was third. We ran very similar to last year and we needed to be just a bit better today.
"Zoey did a good job leading us today, although I know she will really show what she's capable of in two weeks at Notre Dame.
Kelsey Tyler had a huge race for us today. Getting her off to a great start is huge for her and this team."
Tyler adapted well to the muddy conditions, placing 19th overall in a time of 19:22.34. Behind her, freshman
Katelyn Murphy made her collegiate debut with a 24th-place finish in a time of 19:32.14 and Bloomington-native
Alexis Lewandowski was 28th at 19:38.36.
Haley Welch rounded out the Jaguars' scoring five in 32nd place at 19:50.76 and true freshman
Shelby Pake was 35th at 19:58.58.
Savannah Clark (37th) and
Amairany Cruz (43rd) rounded out the varsity entries.
In the open race, junior
Valeria Guzman shined, finishing eighth overall at 19:49.22 and senior
Jennifer Emery was tenth at 20:05.07. Sophomore
Ashley Kidwell continued to impress in the season's early going, spinning a time of 20:39.82.
Purdue freshman Emma Benner won the championship 5K in a time of 17:42.76, easily outclassing the field by nearly 10 seconds. IU put six runners among the top eight finishers to coast to the team title on its home course.
The Jags will return to action on Friday, Sept. 23 when they participate in the Ball State Invitational in Muncie.
