COMEBACK FALLS SHORT AT BALL STATE

Senior Tori Minnich nets her second goal in as many games to start the season

MUNCIE, Ind. - The IUPUI women's soccer team fell into a 3-0 rut at Ball State on Sunday (Aug. 21) and never fully recovered, falling to the host Cardinals, 4-1. Senior Tori Minnich fueled the IUPUI attack with her second score of the season coming off an assist from sophomore Maryna Clark.

"I don't think we got off the bus ready to play in any capacity whatsoever," IUPUI Head Coach Chris Johnson said. "It's a little bit of a disappointment that we had some success on Friday and we had an opportunity to build on that success and weren't prepared to do that.

"The only person I can say that showed up to play today was Cat Schmidt. She did a helluva job in goal to keep us in the game as long as she did."

Despite Schmidt's best effort, Ball State (2-0) jumped ahead in the game's 26th minute on a strike from Monica Padilla, setup by Paula Guerrero. Guerrero played a brilliant ball to Padilla, who flushed a shot past IUPUI the junior goalie for the Cardinals' first of three goals in less than 10 minutes late in the first half.

In the 32nd minute, Sam Kambol put the hosts ahead 2-0 when she finished a long run with a score. She had a teammate running to her left, but opted to cut right before angling a shot past Schmidt. Just more than a minute later, things became dire when the Cards got a score from Julia Elvbo to make it 3-0.

IUPUI (1-1) was able to turn the tables a bit in the second half, beginning with Minnich earning a penalty kick in the 53rd minute. Minnich stuck with a 50-50 opportunity inside the penalty area before being pulled down from behind by BSU keeper Tristin Stuteville. However, junior Hayley Shelton misfired on the ensuing penalty kick.

Moments later, Minnich finally broke open the scoring for the Jags with her 20th career goal. Clark sent a pass in from the left side to Minnich, who was able to redirect a shot into the right side of the net for IUPUI's lone tally of the day. In doing so, she became just the sixth player in program history to amass at least 20 career goals.

Ball State ended any suspense when Kambol netted her second goal of the day in the 80th minute. Kambol was able to one-touch a loose ball inside the right post after IUPUI was unable to clear the zone.

"The girls who got on the field - that's an opportunity for them to show us what they can do," Johnson said of playing 23 players. "I thought there were a couple that did. I thought that Courtney Hodge held her own out there. I thought Maryna (Clark) did a good job in place of Krissy (Kirkhoff), she definitely gave us a lift out there.

"I think our second unit of players is pretty strong - they should be kids in there that should be considered for the starting lineup. Some of them showed today they should be (starters) and some showed they aren't ready yet."

Schmidt finished a busy day in goal with seven saves as the Jaguars were outshot 22-5 overall and 11-3 on frame.

IUPUI will return home to host Marian University on Friday night at 7:00 p.m. at Michael A. Carroll Stadium. IUPUI students are admitted for FREE with a valid JagTag and adult tickets are just $5.
