SCHOOL RECORD FALLS IN 8-0 ROUT OF MARIAN

Senior Catherine Raster records a hat trick in the victory

INDIANAPOLIS - The IUPUI women's soccer team posted a school record eight goals as the Jaguars cruised to an 8-0 rain soaked win over Marian University on Friday night (Aug. 26) in a game that almost didn't happen. The contest was delayed by more than two hours before finally kicking off after the 9 o'clock hour. However, once it began, IUPUI wasted little time, scoring four goals in the opening 20 minutes en route to an easy victory.

Marian fell to 0-1 to start the season.

"We were just really big on we had to keep the energy up. We sat in the lockerroom for hours on end and we just had to come out and execute the gameplan we talked about," junior Hayley Shelton said.

"We wanted to come out with intensity and our first couple games, we didn't really do that," senior Catherine Raster said. "That was a key component to what we wanted to do tonight and I think getting that first goal helped us in keeping that energy up the rest of the half."

The intensity was evident as Raster opened the scoring in the eighth minute when she ripped a volley from inside the 18-yard box. Moments later, Shelton deposited her first career goal off assists from Samantha Bathurst and Alyssa Fox. Thirty-nine seconds later, Raster cashed in from the doorstep after sophomore Maryna Clark had her initial shot attempt saved and tipped off the crossbar. The rebound came to Raster near the far post where she roofed an easy attempt past Marian goalie Melissa Sturgill.

Junior Sarah Jacobs closed the first half scoring in the 20th minute when she ripped a shot from 20 yards out, thanks to a back pass from Shelton.

"The movement off the ball was the best I've seen it all season," Shelton said. "We were switching the ball around the back, opening up gaps and we just played the ball where it needed to be and that helped us get in the back of the net."

The second half opened with a Shelton score in the 48th minute and Raster capped her hat trick 55 seconds later when she drilled a diagonal shot from the left side past the Marian keeper. In doing so, she became the fifth player in IUPUI history to score three goals in a game, joining current teammates Krissy Kirkhoff and Tori Minnich in that category.

Sierra Bryant and Hannah March added late insurance as IUPUI surpassed the previous school record of six goals in a game. For both, it was their first career goals as Bryant's came in her 64th career game.

"We had some really nice goals," Raster said. "We had a lot of people score, which is awesome. I think it was a really good team effort tonight."

Defensively, junior goalie Catherine Schmidt had a light evening, needing just one save in 67 minutes of scoreless action. Freshman goalie Sophia Lipka made a clean debut, mopping up the final 22 minutes between the posts.

IUPUI needed just a 17-8 shot advantage on Friday, but put 12 of their 17 attempts on target. Twenty-four different Jaguars played double-digit minutes as Head Coach Chris Johnson was able to go deep into his bench.

The Jags will cap the weekend at Indiana State on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. in a match that will be broadcast on ESPN3.
