BROOKINGS, S.D. - Down to their last out,
Taylor Chitwood delivered for IUPUI with a two-run single in a 2-1 victory over South Dakota State in game two of the double header.
IUPUI's (14-28, 3-10 Summit) offense had sputtered through the first six innings of the game with only seven hits and stranding six runners. The Jags entered the top of the seventh down 1-0 and were 1-19 when trailing after six innings this season.
Roni Patterson, who went 3-3 with two doubles, began the seventh with a double to right center field.
Sarah Lawrence singled in the next at bat and moved Patterson over to third.
Delilah Wright, who also went 3-3 on the day, reached on an infield single to load the bases.
The Jags made things stressful as
Ali Mosier popped up to short and
Morgan Schlobohm grounded out. This brought up Chitwood, who needed a hit to avoid the sweep from the Jackrabbits (17-30, 3-8 Summit). Chitwood delivered for the Jags with a shot down the right field line that brought home Lawrence and
Alyssa Matson, who pinch ran for Wright, to give the Jags a 2-1 lead.
IUPUI was not out of the woods yet as a single plus an error put a runner on second with one out for South Dakota State. A ground out moved the tying run sixty feet away but
Kaitlynn Moody stood strong and struck out the final batter to end the game.
Moody (5-8) was solid for the Jags, going all seven innings while giving up seven hits but only one run, which came in the bottom of the sixth. Moody also finished with a career high nine strikeouts.
The Jags fell in game one of the double header to South Dakota State in 11 innings on a walk-off wild pitch.
Maggie Good led the way offensively for IUPUI, going 2-5 at the plate with a double and driving in both runs for the Jags.
#Brooke Boetjer gave the Jags a strong start going eight innings and only giving up five hits, but gave up the tying run in the bottom of the eighth after the Jags took a 2-1 lead in the top half of the inning on a Good single that scored Taylor Chitwood.
IUPUI opened up the scoring in the first inning when Good doubled home Schlobohm to give the Jags a 1-0 lead.
South Dakota State got a solo home run to tie the game in bottom of the fourth from Ali Herdliska.
The Jags got runners on in the ninth and tenth innings but left them stranded both times.
Nickole Finch (2-5) replaced Boetjer in the ninth inning and threw two strong innings. In the bottom of the eleventh, Herdliska doubled to start the inning and was moved over to third on a bunt single. In the next at bat, a wild pitch brought home Herdliska to give the Jackrabbits the win.
IUPUI and South Dakota State finish up the three game series tomorrow (April 24) with first pitch scheduled for 12 pm ET.
