INDIANAPOLIS - Thanks to a comeback in the final inning and a walkoff error, IUPUI (11-26) ended its ten-game losing streak with a 5-4 win against Wright State (24-16). The Jags fell 2-0 in the first game of the double header.
The comeback started in the bottom of the seventh after Wright State took a 4-3 lead in the top of the inning after Kaitlynn Moody hit a batter with the bases loaded after relieving
Nickole Finch. Moody (3-7) came in with the bases loaded and got two groundouts with the runners being thrown out at home before plunking the next batter and bringing in the go-ahead run.Â
With the Jags down to their last out in the game, Kristin London drew a pinch hit walk to keep the game going.
Ali Mosier doubled after a diving attempt in center field bounced off the glove of the center fielder to put the tying run 60 feet away for
Morgan Schlobohm. Schlobohm lifted a ball into shallow left center field and the ball was dropped by the center fielder allowing London and Mosier to come across the plate and give the Jags the win.Â
Wright State got the scoring started in the top of the fourth off of starter
Brooke Boetjer with a solo home run to dead center. Later in the inning, the Raiders added another run later in the inning on a single to left to make the score 2-0.
The Jags came back in the bottom of the frame when, with two outs and the bases loaded,
Sarah Lawrence ripped a double that hit the base of the fence in left field that cleared the bases and put the Jags on top.Â
In the top of the fifth, Wright State looked like it was going to tie up the ballgame when a ball was hit to the left field wall with a runner on second but a strong throw by Lawrence to
Maggie Good who threw a perfect strike to
Roni Patterson took down the runner and kept the Jags in the lead.
But Wright State did tie up the game in the top of the sixth when Boetjer's first pitch of the inning was deposited over the left field fence for another solo home run which led to the fireworks in the seventh.
Game one did not go so well for the Jags as the offense was shut down by Ashley Sharp who only gave up five hits in the complete game shutout. The Jags never really threatened Sharp, only getting a runner on second in one inning.Â
The Jags got a sold start from freshman Erica Tharp who only gave up one run in her four innings pitched. Moody relieved Tharp and only gave up one run herself in the final three frames. Despite the strong pitching, the Jags fell for the tenth straight time with the lack of offense.Â
IUPUI is back in action as they host IPFW for three games with a double header Saturday (April 16) and the final game of the series on Sunday (April 17).
