RALEIGH, N.C. - In a repeat of the first game of the NC State DoubleTree RDU Invite, Ohio beat the Jags 2-1, this time in eight innings instead of nine. The matchup featured strong outings from both pitchers with only seven combined hits.
In her best start to date, freshman Kaitlynn Moody (2-5) gave the Jags (9-16) a strong performance despite picking up the loss. Moody threw a complete game only allowing four hits and one earned run, while striking out five Bobcats. With the effort Moody lowered her ERA to 3.36.Â
Unfortunately, Moody's performance was not enough as the Jags bats were stifled by Ohio's Savannah Jo Dorsey. Dorsey also threw a complete game, only allowing three hits and one run while striking out ten Jags.Â
During regulation, the Jags only got one batter to second base. It came in the fourth inning after
Morgan Schlobohm walked to lead off the inning. Two batters later,
Roni Patterson bunted for a single to move Schlobohm to second. With a chance to open up the scoring with a hit,
Maggie Good and
Ali Mosier both struck out to end the inning.
Ohio (16-7) had a few more chances than the Jags but were never able to capitalize. In the second, with a runner on third, Moody forced a ground ball to end the inning. Ohio put another runner in scoring position in the third but Patterson caught the runner trying to steal third to end the threat. In the sixth, after another Bobcat reached second, Patterson threw that runner out as well, trying to advance to third on a ball in the dirt.
The only scoring came in the eighth inning when the game shifted to the International Tiebreaker Rule a put a runner on second to start the inning. The Jags began the inning with Mosier on second base.
Sarah Lawrence laid a bunt down the third base line to move Mosier over and the throw to first went over the first baseman's head and in to right field to score Mosier and give the Jags the 1-0 lead.
In the bottom of the inning, Ohio moved their runner over to third on a sacrifice bunt. In the next at-bat, close play at first went the Bobcats way and Ohio had runners on the corners with only one out. Moody got a pop fly to right field for the second out but it was deep enough to move both runners up and tie the game. The next batter lined a single to left center field that fell in front of
Alyssa Matson to bring home the winning run.
The Jags are back in action tomorrow,  Monday, March 21, with their home opener against UIC. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 p.m., at the IUPUI Softball Complex. Â
