FARGO, N.D. – The IUPUI women's basketball team (17-7, 8-3) rallied from a 10-point second half deficit to steal a 64-63 victory on the road against North Dakota State (6-19, 1-11) Friday night (Feb. 12) for their fourth straight victory. With the win, IUPUI moves back into third place in The Summit League standings.
"Any road win is a great feeling," Head Coach
Austin Parkinson said. "We were sloppy and our effort was low in the first half but the kids came out with some fire in the second half and got stops."
Sophomore guard, and reigning back-to-back Summit League Player of the Week,
Danielle Lawrence scored 21 points for the Jags, including 17 in the second half and 10 in the fourth quarter, as well as the game-winning basket with just eight seconds left. She broke the 20-point mark for the fourth consecutive game.
Junior center
Mikale Rogers was solid throughout the game providing 15 points and 11 rebounds in her fifth double-double of the season. Senior
Akilah Sims chipped in 11 points and nine boards in the game while sophomore
Jenna Gunn had a big fourth quarter and finished with six points and seven rebounds.
The Jags managed a 15-13 lead at the end of the first quarter before NDSU reeled off a 10-0 run. The Jags made two runs in the second quarter but trailed 33-41 at the half.
IUPUI opened the second half with a 12-2 run to regain the lead at 45-43. Lawrence was huge in propelling the Jags back in front with seven third quarter points. Rogers controlled the boards in the third quarter and IUPUI took a tied game (49-49) into the final stanza.
Lawrence scored five quick points to give IUPUI a 54-51 advantage, but NDSU hung around and eventually grabbed a 63-60 lead with just under a minute to play.
A pair of Lawrence free throws made it a 63-62 game with 50 seconds remaining. A stop on the defensive end gave the Jags the ball back with just 25 seconds. Parkinson called timeout to set up his final offensive possession which resulted in Rogers finding Lawrence at the rim for the game-winner with just eight seconds on the clock. NDSU's Taylor Thunstedt fired a three at the horn that missed.
"I really like the maturity of our team to execute during the last minute," Parkinson added. "Mikale had tremendous court awareness to deliver the game-winner to Danielle."
The Jags shot just 36 percent from the floor and 20 percent (1-5) from the 3-point line, but they were impressive again from the free-throw line (17-20). IUPUI outrebounded NDSU 43-35 after NDSU held a 10-2 rebound advantage after the first quarter. The game included eight ties and 13 lead changes.
IUPUI has a quick turnaround as the Jags travel to Denver for a Sunday (Feb. 14) matchup at 3 p.m. ET.
