INDIANAPOLIS – Playing in the final home match of the 2016 season, the IUPUI volleyball team (11-18, 7-7) came up short in their journey to snap a three-match losing streak, falling in straight-sets to North Dakota State (12-16, 10-4) Saturday (Nov. 5). The loss pushes the team to a .500 mark in Summit League play with two matches left to go in the regular season.
After a drastically improved offensive showing the night before, the Jags were inefficient on the attack, hitting just .137 for the match. They committed 18 errors on the attack, six of which came on the block by the Bison' defense. The Jags also committed four errors on the serve, setting the tone for the night in a mistake-riddled match.
The Jags were led by
Logan Walling, as the senior honoree picked up a team-high 11 kills on an explosive .625 attack percentage.
Kori Waelbroeck added 10 kills while
Alexis Mapes picked up 29 assists.
An even bout to begin the first set, the Bison broke a 10-10 tie on an attack error by the Jags. That lead would hold up throughout the frame, as the Jags committed six errors on the attack to 12 kills. Hitting .154 on 39 attempts, the Bison roared ahead, eventually leading by as many as seven points while pushing to an 18-25 victory.
Gabby Fisher led the set for the Jags with four kills.
Three-straight kills gave the Bison a lead to start the second, as NDSU jumped up on IUPUI 3-0. It took some time, but the Jags would rally back, eventually tying the set on a kill by Fisher, setting the score at 14-14. The deadlock was short lived, as an 8-1 run from the Bison eventually gave North Dakota State a big win, 17-25.
Another tough beginning gave NDSU a 4-0 early. Two points was as close as IUPUI would get, as the Bison surged well ahead. Runs of 4-0, 6-0 and 3-0 helped the Bison catapult to a big lead victory, 14-25.
The loss brings an end to the IUPUI home schedule for the 2016 season. The Jags will now play a pair of road matches against to close the regular season, facing Western Illinois next weekend (Nov. 11) followed by Oral Roberts (Nov. 13).
Prior to the match, seniors Walling, Mapes and
Abby Horn were honored for their collegiate careers.
