INDIANAPOLIS – Fresh off a short Thanksgiving break, the IUPUI women's basketball team (4-1) were aggressive from long-range, riding the three-point shot to a route (83-57) of Georgia Southern (2-4) Saturday afternoon (Nov. 26). The Jags set a record with 16 three-point shots in a single game, as Head Coach
Austin Parkinson reached the 100-win mark with IUPUI.
Five players for IUPUI finished in double-digit points, as
Jenna Gunn,
Mikale Rogers,
Caitlyn Tolen,
Danielle Lawrence, and
Sydney Hall all accomplished the mark. The Jags shot 30-for-60 (.500) from the floor, including 16-for-31 from three-point range.
Only a combined three buckets dropped in through the first four minutes for both squads, as IUPUI grabbed a 4-2 lead thanks to a Gunn layup. Rogers answered an Eagles three-pointer with an and-one play, converting the free-throw to grant the Jags a two-point edge. Hall knifed through the lane for a flash layup, Rogers punched an Eagles shot away, and Gunn put up her second layup to give IUPUI an 11-8 lead at the 3:50 mark. Next trip down for the Jags,
Kelsi Byrd ripped a right-side triple on an assist from Lawrence to put her team up four. Rogers would make it back-to-back-to-back offensive possessions on a turnaround layup from the right side, followed soon after by a Tolen right-side triple to make it 19-14 with a minute left in the quarter. The Jags defense pressured Georgia Southern into a back-court violation, giving Hoopingarner a chance to drop in a right-side three-pointer on a forgiving bounce off the rim, putting IUPUI up 22-14 to end the frame.
Tolen took the lid off the basket in the second, hitting the Jags first left-side shot of the game for a three-pointer, extending the IUPUI lead to 11. Next trip down, Lawrence ripped the nylon on a smooth triple from the top of the arc, making it 28-14. Out of a Georgia Southern timeout, both teams went stagnant for roughly a minute and a half, before
Allex Brown dropped in a pair of free-throws to make it a 16-point game. It took nearly two minutes for either side to score, as it came in the form of an Eagles free-throw to end the drought. Lawrence responded with another triple on the next offensive possession, giving the Jags their biggest lead of the afternoon. Hall, who just came off a game in which she dropped in seven three-pointers, added a left-side triple to make it 36-15. Hall hit again from the same spot at the 2:15 mark, extending it to a 21-point lead at 39-18. The Eagles would add one basket before the break, as the Jags carried a hefty lead into the half, 39-20.
The Jags shot 14-for-29 in the first half (.483), including a stellar showing from three-point range, going 8-for-17 (.471). The Jags' defense forced seven turnovers, picking up 11 points off the opportunities, and limited their mistakes to five turnovers. IUPUI had 11 assists to just four for Georgia Southern.
Lawrence began the first half with a step-in jumper from the left-side on an assist from Rogers to reclaim a 21-point lead. Rogers followed that with a near-impossible fall-away layup, throwing up a prayer while being fouled for an and-one opportunity. She missed the free-throw, but Hall picked up the offensive board to give a second chance to IUPUI. With the opportunity, Tolen dropped in a right-side triple, the ninth for the Jags, to blow the game wide open. A pair of possession later, Rogers managed to work inside the defense, getting to the rim off a pass from Hall. Lawrence connected from the top of the arc for the 10th Jags three-pointer, soon followed by the Jags 11th by Hall. Hall found Gunn near the hoop on the next trip down, converting for the layup and forcing a Georgia Southern timeout. Lawrence kept the three-point rain cloud saturated, as she dropped in a right-side triple to give IUPUI a 29-point lead. Hoopingarner would hit a three-pointer, Rogers hit a layup, and Gunn added a fade-away jumper to make it 66-38. One free-throw would be added by Georgia Southern before the end of the third quarter, as IUPUI led big heading into the final frame. The Jags shot 11-for-18 (.611) from the field in the quarter, as well as 5-for-8 from long range.
Rogers hit 1-of-2 free-throws 47 seconds into the fourth quarter, but IUPUI would remain silent for nearly two minutes until Gunn chalked up an and-one play to put the Jags in front, 70-45. After missing a pair of free-throws earlier, Gunn dropped in both with a second-chance at the charity stripe, padding the Jag lead with over five minutes to play. Tolen dropped in the 14th Jag triple at the top of the arc, while
Taylor Drake hit her first bucket with a right-side layup to make it 77-53.
Allex Brown tied the Jags team three-point record with the 15th of the game, knocking it down from the top of the arc. Just moments later, Hoopingarner hit the 16th triple, setting the new team record for IUPUI. They'd end the game with the same score, 83-57.
With the victory, the Jags will return to the road for a solo game, their last in November, as the team will face Indiana State (Nov. 30) at 5:30 p.m. EST. Live audio play-by-play will be available for free via IUPUI Live!
