INDIANAPOLIS – Playing in just their second game of the young regular season, the IUPUI women's basketball team (1-1) put on a scoring barrage against Oakland City (0-2) Wednesday night (Nov. 16), picking up their first win of the new year. Every player that suited up scored for the Jags.
IUPUI shot .513 as a team (39-for-76), as five players finished in double-digit points.
Holly Hoopingarner led all players with 21 points, adding three rebounds, three assists and a pair of steal.
Danielle Lawrence had 18 points and four assists,
Jenna Gunn had 13 points and seven rebounds, and newcomer
Taylor Drake added 12 points and eight rebounds.
Mikale Rogers had 10 points and nine boards,
Caitlyn Tolen had eight points and four assists, while
Kelsi Byrd and
Daesjah Ely both added a basket each.
Hall took the lid off the bucket for IUPUI to start the game, picking up an offensive board and putting it back at the 8:40 mark to tie the game. Next trip down for the Jags, Gunn connected on a right side layup to give IUPUI its first lead. At 6:35, Rogers dropped in her first bucket of the game, pulling in a pass from Hall and utilizing a right-handed hook shot. Next trip down, Hoopingarner connected from beyond the arc, the first triple for the Jags, to make it a 9-4 lead. Lawrence picked up a layup, Hoopingarner knocked down a triple, and Lawrence converted an and-one play to make it a 17-4 game. They'd add to it on a triple from Hoopingarner, her third of the game, to give the Jags a 16-point lead at the 3:50 mark. Lawrence would find an opening from the right side to splash in her first triple, Drake would hit a pair of free throws, and Hoopingarner would add a nice slashing layup on the final possession to give the Jags a 27-7 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Rogers kicked off the second quarter with an and-one play just 17 seconds into the new frame, following that with a layup the next time down. After a steal, Hoopingarner hit from just left of the free-throw line on a fast-break bucket, putting IUPUI up 33-7. Tolen added her first basket after picking up an offensive rebound on a missed free-throw, while Hall later added a nice reverse layup to make it 37-12. After swiping another ball, Tolen added her second bucket. Next trip down, Byrd connected with Hall to make it 41-15, followed quickly by a Drake layup on a fast break chance, with the assist by Byrd. With under 5:00 left to play in the half, the Jags added another 11 points down the stretch, heading into the halftime break with the score 54-23. The Jags scored 27 in the frame to 16 for OCU.
Gunn started the scoring for the Jags in the third frame, hitting a right-side layup at the 8:30 mark. After a pair of free-throws, Lawrence made another and-one play, her second of the game, to make it a 25-point lead. Rogers landed a turnaround hook, Hoopingarner hit a fast break layup, Drake found the nylon a pair of times, and the Jags continued to blow it open, 69-36 at the 3:23 mark. Byrd connected on a jumper at the 3:19 mark to mark the ninth Jag player to score in the game. The Jags only brought nine active players into the contest. Gunn and Lawrence each added layups to end the quarter, as the Jags carried a 76-44 lead. The closest frame of the contest, IUPUI edged OCU 22-21.
Hoopingarner tacked on her fifth three-pointer to start the final quarter, followed quickly by a Gunn bucket. Hall earned her first triple at about the 8:20 mark, as Gunn connected on a lightning quick bucket on a good pass from Hoopingarner to make it a 40-point edge. Drake hit a layup on an assist from Hoopingarner, followed by a Gunn triple from the right corner just before a media timeout with 4:45 left to play. A backward pass from Tolen to Drake in the paint pushed IUPUI to 93 points, but IUPUI went dry over the next three minutes. With roughly a half minute to play, Tolen ended the drought on a jumper, the final basket of the game for the Jags, as IUPUI cruised to a 95-62 win.
The Jags held the advantage in rebounds, picking up 49 to 32 for the Lady Oaks. The Jags received 37 points off the bench, tallying nine blocks, 10 steals, and 38 points off of turnovers.
With the victory, the Jags will now head to the road for the first time, as the Jags are slated to face Illinois-Chicago in Chicago, Illinois on Nov. 19 at 3 p.m. EST.
