VERONA, Wisc. - The IUPUI women's cross country saved their best for last on Friday (Nov. 11) as the Jaguars finished 20th at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional, hosted by Wisconsin. Specifically, sophomore
Zoey Johnson enjoyed the best day in IUPUI history, covering the 6K course in a time of 21:19.0 to establish a new school record.
She was supported by true freshman
Katelyn Murphy who finished 101st overall and
Valeria Guzman, who was 116th.
"This was a much better performance for our women," said IUPUI Head Coach
Antonio McDaniel, who welcomed his first child just two weeks ago. "Almost everyone ran a season-best, including Zoey's school record. I'm proud of our team for showing up and competing their best at the last meet of the season.
"We will now take a much needed break and get ready for track season."
Johnson was the Jaguars' leader from the outset and eventually trimmed a second off the previous 6K record, set by
Rachel Zajac in 2013, shattering her own PR by 19 seconds.
"Today was the most excited I've been for a race all season. I love the Wisconsin course and it's exciting getting to race amongst some of the best girls in the nation," Johnson said. "I was relaxed going into my race today and was able to stay focused the entire time. I just kept moving up gradually.
"I'm also happy our team as a whole had a good performance."
The youthful Jags showed some exuberance on Friday as Murphy finished at 22:12.7 and Guzman continued to get stronger over the latter part of the season, running a time of 22:25.7. Murphy took 29 seconds off her best time of the year.
Sophomore
Alexis Lewandowski was 132nd at 22:36.7 and true freshman
Shelby Pake capped the scoring five in 140th at 22:42.1. Like Murphy, Pake's time eclipsed her previous best by 29 seconds.
Junior
Kelsey Tyler and sophomore
Amairany Cruz capped the lineup in 158th and 166th, respectively. Tyler ran a time of 22:56.5 and Cruz crossed at 23:11.6.
Michigan waltzed to the team title with 61 points, followed by Notre Dame (91), Wisconsin (97), Michigan State (97) and Eastern Michigan (102). Michigan's Erin Finn took the individual tape in a time of 19:27.8, beating her closest competitor by nearly eight seconds.
