FORT WAYNE, Ind. - IUPUI senior forward
Tori Minnich scored a pair of goals in her final collegiate trip to her hometown as the Jaguars played Fort Wayne to a 2-2 double overtime draw in Summit League play on Friday night (Oct. 7).
IUPUI (7-5-2, 1-1-1 Summit) yielded a goal just 34 seconds into the match and had to play from behind for much of the evening.
"We came out and dug ourselves a hole right away," IUPUI Head Coach
Chris Johnson said. "We shot ourselves in the foot and that's something that's plagued us.
"Winning on the road in conference play is difficult. Getting one point (on the road) is a good thing and certainly wasn't easy, but at some point, you have to be able to get three (points)."
Gaby Romo staked Fort Wayne (3-9-1) to the quick lead before Minnich scored her first of two equalizers in the 14th minute. Junior
Krissy Kirkhoff slotted a pass into the senior forward, who slid a shot past Fort Wayne goalie Kiley Dunning.
The hosts retook the lead in the 32nd minute on Hannah Kroger's free kick from just outside the penalty area and Fort Wayne held the lead until halftime.
However, the start of the half offered a different story.
"We came out and got the second goal and were pretty much taking it to them," Johnson said. "I was pleased with what I saw at the start of the second half."
Minnich netted her seventh goal of the year and 24th of her collegiate career in the 57th minute when she was on the receiving end of a long
Sarah Jacobs restart.
IUPUI seemed ripe to take the lead in the 62nd minute when Kirkhoff ripped a shot off the crossbar, but the Jags were similarly lucky just more than a minute later when Fort Wayne hit the bar.
The Jags continued to pepper the IPFW defense throughout the match, but couldn't solve a pair of Mastodon goalkeepers. Kirkhoff thought she had a golden opportunity for the game-winner in the 105th minute when she cut past a defender and drew contact just beyond the penalty area. As Kirkhoff maintained her feet inside the box, the official blew the play dead, rather than play the advantage. Frustration boiled over for the IUPUI attacker, who was issued a red card for her reaction. Junior
Hayley Shelton sent the ensuing free kick high of target.
IUPUI finished with a 22-9 shot advantage and 9-4 margin on frame. Junior goalie
Catherine Schmidt made two saves and moved her record to 4-4-2 on the year. Kirkhoff, Shelton and
Catherine Raster had a team-high five shot attempts while Minnich attempted three. Â
Minnich upped her personal total to five career goals against the Mastodons, playing in front of roughly 50 friends and family members on Friday.
"It's always special playing back at home in front of all my family and friends. It meant so much to me that they all chose to spend their Friday night watching us play," Minnich said. "I grew up playing at Hefner Fields. I'm glad I could go out with a goal, but it's still upsetting we weren't able to get out of there with a win."
The Jags will now return home to host Omaha on Friday (Oct. 14) before trekking to Oral Roberts on Sunday (Oct. 16).
