JAGS PLAY MAVS TO 1-1 SUMMIT LEAGUE DRAW

IUPUI's lone score comes on a Sarah Jacobs PK in the 50th minute

INDIANAPOLIS - In a match that would've vaulted the victor into prime position in The Summit League standings, the IUPUI women's soccer team played Omaha to a 1-1 double overtime draw at the on-campus Michael A. Carroll Stadium on a near perfect Friday night (Oct. 14) in Central Indiana. IUPUI's goal came on a Sarah Jacobs penalty kick in the 50th minute before the Mavs drew even in the 59th minute on a Lydia Holtmann score.

IUPUI moved its record to 7-5-3 overall and 1-1-2 in Summit League play while Omaha went to 4-8-3 overall and 2-1-1 against league foes.

"I thought our kids played really well. We came out with a lot of energy and connected passes and created opportunities for ourselves," IUPUI Head Coach Chris Johnson said. "I was really happy with the effort level we had. We just didn't quite find some of those winning moments we needed to find and I thought their keeper came up big on two plays in particular."

The Jaguars could only blame themselves for going to the locker room square after a scoreless first half, as IUPUI outshot Omaha 10-4 and had six first half corner kicks. Three of the six corner kicks came in the opening six minutes as the Jaguars owned momentum from the get-go.

The best early attempt was a Braegan Lyon drive on frame in the12th minute and the sophomore later had a header played off the line in the 31st minute. Late in the half, freshman Olivia Malott tested Omaha goalie Haley Shelton with a shot on frame from a tough angle, moving to her right.

As they've done many times this season, the Jags came out of the intermission energized and ultimately got the game's first goal in the 50th minute. Senior Tori Minnich negotiated her way deep into Omaha territory before her cross was knocked down by the arm of a Mav defender. Jacobs then cooly stepped up for the ensuing penalty kick, leaving Shelton frozen for her second score of the year.

The lead was short lived though as the Jags defense looked ragged over the next 10-plus minutes. The result was an errant clearance, leaving the ball on a tee for Lydia Holtmann to blast past junior netminder Catherine Schmidt.

The two teams traded opportunities throughout the second half, both obviously pushing for a three-point win, as opposed to the one-point earned for a draw.

It looked as though IUPUI might find the winner off the opening kickoff of the first overtime as the Jags charged up the middle of the field. Minnich slid a pass to senior Catherine Raster, who had the angle to loop a shot over Shelton. However, Shelton retreated to her line and punched the attempt off the left post and back on to the field. All total, Shelton made four saves against Raster attempts in the first overtime period alone as half of Raster's 10 shots came in the final 20 minutes.

"I thought the kids really responded well to going into the overtime and coming out and really putting some things together," Johnson said. "We've got to find ways to put balls in the back in those situations.

"We did enough to win the game tonight, but didn't come away with a win and that's disappointing."

IUPUI closed with a 22-17 shot advantage and 10-8 edge in shots on target. The Jags also had an 11-8 edge in corner kicks, but went empty on the restart opportunities.

Schmidt collected six saves in the draw while Shelton had eight for the Mavs.

The Jags played without junior attacker Krissy Kirkhoff after she was issued a red card in the closing minutes of last weekend's 2-2 draw at Fort Wayne.

IUPUI will now have an early flight to Tulsa before playing Oral Roberts on Sunday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. Eastern. That match can be seen via the link on IUPUIJags.com, right at kickoff.
