TULSA, Okla. - The IUPUI women's soccer team picked a poor time for one of its worst showings of the year as the Jaguars were blitzed by Oral Roberts, 6-1 on Sunday afternoon (Oct. 16). The host Golden Eagles tallied six unanswered goals before a late strike from the Jaguars broke up the shutout bid in the waning minutes.
ORU leapfrogged the Jaguars in the crowded Summit League standings, improving to 7-9-1 overall and 2-3 in league play. IUPUI slid to 7-6-3 overall and 1-2-2 in The Summit with three matches yet to play.
Oral Roberts struck first in the 26th minute and was on an all out assault from there. Lexi Jones scored her first of two goals to give the Golden Eagles the lead and Chloe Basnett made it 2-0 just before halftime.
Things got dire for the Jags when Tahlor Lyman made it 3-0 in the 50tth minute before Jones tallied again in the 54th minute. Mariah Morgan slid a pass to Jones in the middle, who snuck a shot past junior goalie
Catherine Schmidt.
After a change in goal, freshman
Sophia Lipka was immediately greeted with a goal when Maria Stordahl picked off a pass and dribbled around the IUPUI netminder for a score. ORU's Alexia Herrera capped the hosts scoring in the 73rd minute off an assist from Basnett.
IUPUI nearly got on the board in the 85th minute when
Sarah Jacobs hit the bar on a restart deep in ORU territory. Junior back
Leia Peterman finally broke up the shutout in the 88th minute when she tallied her first score of the season, thanks to
Hayley Shelton's sixth assist of the year.
The IUPUI goalie duo of Schmidt and Lipka was under duress for much of the match as ORU outshot the Jaguars 20-12 overall and 15-6 on frame. Senior
Tori Minnich led IUPUI with three shots on goal and
Catherine Raster had two attempts.
IUPUI will return home to host Western Illinois next Sunday (Oct. 23) at 1:00 p.m. at the on-campus Michael A. Carroll Stadium. Admission is FREE of charge for IUPUI students with a valid JagTag. IUPUI will honor the senior class immediately after they play in their final home match.
