INDIANAPOLIS - IUPUI senior
Tori Minnich supplied the game-winning goal and added an assist as she and the Jaguars were victorious over Western Illinois on Senior Day (Oct. 23), 2-0 at Michael A. Carroll Stadium. Minnich tallied the game-winner in the 52nd minute and sophomore
Maryna Clark added insurance in the 73rd minute.
The win kept IUPUI (8-6-3, 2-2-2 Summit) alive in the hunt for the four-team Summit League tournament while Western Illinois dripped to 4-10-2 overall and 2-4-1 in league play.
"I'm really proud of our ladies today. Senior Day is never easy because of all the emotion that comes with it, but our girls stuck with it and finally broke through when we needed to," IUPUI Head Coach
Chris Johnson said. "I thought we showed a lot of poise and even though we didn't score in the first half, we continued to do the things we needed to do to be successful.
"Tori's goal definitely took some pressure off and I know she was happy to get one in her final home game. Defensively, we kept it pretty clean for the entire match. I thought our backs did a good job of keeping everything in front of them and Cat (Schmidt) made the saves when we needed her to."
The Jags had a bevy of quality chances in the opening half, including a sequence in the 43rd minute where Minnich caused a pile-up at the far post. WIU goalie Jennifer Currie made and initial stop on
Hayley Shelton's attempt in amongst the scrum before the ball was cleared well outside the box. However, freshman
Courtney Hodge sent the ball back in off the crossbar before it was cleared away for a second time.
Minnich wasted little time getting the winner in the second half though, thanks to a long lead pass from
Leia Peterman. Peterman sent the ball up the left side to Minnich, who had an unmarked teammate running clean through the middle. However, Minnich cut back to her right before calling her own number and flaring her team-high eighth goal of the season over Currie.
In the 73rd minute, Minnich received a pass from Clark and swung a pass out wide to senior
Sierra Bryant. Bryant centered a pass to Clark, who had continued her run to the middle. Clark was able to redirect a shot just inside the far post for her first goal of the 2016 season.
The Jags nearly gave a goal back in the 74th minute off the ensuing kickoff, but Stacie Wolfgram had her attempt stabbed by Schmidt at the near post.
IUPUI finished with a decisive 15-6 advantage in shot attempts and 7-3 on target. Shelton paced the team with three attempts.
Schmidt made three saves in her third career shutout and the seventh of her collegiate career. The eighth win gave the Jags their most since the 2010 squad also collected eight victories.
IUPUI will cap the regular season with a pair of road matches next weekend. The Jags will play at South Dakota State on Friday, Oct. 28 before finishing at North Dakota State on Sunday, Oct. 30.
