INDIANAPOLIS - The IUPUI men's soccer team posted a result with a 1-1 draw against Northern Kentucky on a rainy Wednesday night (Oct. 26) at the on-campus Michael A. Carroll Stadium. Junior forward
Pape Ndiaye had his best effort of the season, tallying his first career goal in the game's 55th minute.
However, NKU's Alwin Komolong registered the equalizer in the 69th minute to cap the evening's scoring.
"First and foremost, I'm really happy with the student-athletes' resolve over the course of 110 minutes to grind out a result," Head Coach
Brian Barnett said. "There were moments when we had more of the run of play and there were moments when they had more of the run of play.
"Unfortunately, we gave up the equalizer after having gone up one-nil, but then, it was back to 1-1 and we did a good job to recover. Obviously, you always want more than a point at home, but it's good to get (a point) nonetheless because results are results and we can build from that."
After a scoreless first half, IUPUI (1-13-1) went ahead early in the second half when Ndiaye blasted a shot off NKU goalie Owen Betz and inside the near post for the game's first goal. Freshman
Nathan Silva setup the play by sending the ball to the far side and sophomore
Ben Thornton was also credited with an assist on the play.
Invigorated by the lead, IUPUI tried to stretch out to a two-goal advantage moments later by Betz stopped a
Pedro Valladao rebound attempt in the 59th minute and also stopped an Ndiaye header in the 60th minute.
"Over the course of the game, (Ndiaye) really started to work on being stronger with his back to the goal and holding off defenders and getting his first touch down so that he would be able to link from our players that are joining from behind," Barnett said of Ndiaye. "To see him really develop with that over the course of the game was very nice.
"Any time your strikers are getting goals, that's a good thing for the team and a good thing for them as individuals to go ahead and build on that going forward to the next game."
IUPUI's shutout bid when by the wayside in the 69th minute when Komolong redirected a Johannes Jansen cross past redshirt freshman
James Mitchison, who was caught in no man's land as the ball was sent it.
The Jaguars had quality chances in the first overtime, but Betz made saves against Ndiaye and
Sean Siasia in the 93rd and 94th minutes, respectively. Ndiaye put up two more of his game-high nine shots on target in the second overtime period, to no avail.
Betz finished with 10 saves while Mitchison collected nine stops in his second career start. NKU outshot IUPUI 23-20 and had a 9-6 edge on corner kicks.
IUPUI will return to Summit League play on Saturday (Oct. 29) when the Jags face Fort Wayne at 7:00 p.m..
