VOLLEYBALL COMPLETES DRAMATIC COMEBACK, DROPS FORT WAYNE

The Jags trailed 0-2, eventually winning three-straight matches in a tight contest.

INDIANAPOLIS – The IUPUI volleyball (9-14, 5-3) team completed a dramatic comeback Tuesday (Oct. 18), erasing a 2-0 deficit against Fort Wayne (9-12, 5-3) to win in five sets (25-27, 23-25, 25-22, 25-23, 15-7).  The victory pushes the Jags win-streak to three matches, their longest of the season.

IUPUI was led by Kori Waelbroeck, who had 19 kills on the night with 11 digs in a double-double effort.  Gabby Fisher also went off in a double-double performance, picking up 16 kills and 19 digs.  Off of her first-career Defensive Player of the Week selection, Abby Boatman had 13 kills and five total blocks, while Logan Walling came through in clutch moments with nine kills and two solo blocks.  Elizabeth Scott tallied nine kills in the match with seven digs, while Jessica Helms and Alexis Mapes had 20 digs each.  Mapes also tossed a career-high 61 assists in the match.

Benefitting from sloppy play by their opposition early, IUPUI broke into a 6-6 tie by picking up seven of their next nine points via error.  Three of the errors came from behind the base line on serves, while four came on the attack, giving the Jags a 15-10 edge.  The teams would go even over the next three points, which included a pair of kills by Boatman, to push the score to 18-13 in favor of the Jags.  Out of a Fort Wayne timeout, the teams pushed the affair to 23-21 after Fort Wayne picked up five of seven points on errors by the Jags.  Following an IUPUI timeout, three straight Mastodons points forced the Jags into yet another break, as the in-state rivals held a set-point.  Boatman tied the game at 24 after picking up her third kill, then would quickly add her fourth to give IUPUI a set-point.  Back-to-back points by the 'Dons shifted momentum the other direction, as a kill on an errant block gave Fort Wayne the first set, 25-27.  Both teams were held under .200 for the set, as the Jags hit .095 to the Mastodons' .159 clip.

After stumbling out of the gate, the Jags rallied from as many as three points down in the early going to tie the game, 7-7.  A 4-1 run by the 'Dons would gift them a comfortable lead, as they'd charge ahead, 8-11.  The Jags would pick up five kills over their next seven points, including an ace by Boatman, to tie the game at 14 all.  After the deadlock, Fort Wayne reeled off three-straight points on a pair of kills to force an IUPUI timeout, 14-17.  After making it a four-point deficit, the Jags got back-to-back kills from Fisher and Waelbroeck to cut into the gap.  After an exchange, an eventual block by Boatman and Waelbroeck would tie the game again, 20-20.  Fort Wayne would piece together a 4-1 run thanks in part to a pair of errors by IUPUI to give the 'Dons a set-point.  Following a kill and a block for the Jags, the 'Dons would eventually seal it, 23-25.  The offensive tempo improved from the first set, as the team hit .212, but couldn't slow down the .375 clip of Fort Wayne.

Three kills, a block, and an error put the Jags in a hole to start the third frame, as the 'Dons jumped out to a 5-0 lead.  It'd take some time, but the Jags fought back, eventually erasing the deficit on a 10-5 run.  Tied at 15, the Jags would break off a 4-2 run, guided by kills from Boatman and Fisher, to take a 19-17 lead.  They'd force a Fort Wayne timeout after extending their advantage, going up 21-18 on a kill from Walling.  Kills by walling, Waelbroeck and Scott would eventually give the Jags a set-point, as an attack error by Fort Wayne would hand the Jags the set, 25-22.  Both teams offensive efficiency fluttered, as the Jags hit .176 to Fort Wayne's .158.  A rare set for the Jags, IUPUI was held without a block in the third frame.

The fourth set featured a tight battle, as the teams fought their way to a 12-12 tie.  IUPUI would string together a 5-2 run, thanks in part to three kills from Waelbroeck, Boatman and Fisher to take a 17-14 lead.  Fort Wayne would battle back, as the teams were squared up deep in the set, 21-21.  Fisher broke the deadlock on an emphatic shot down the middle, followed by an attack error by the 'Dons to go up by a pair.  A kill by Scott would give the Jags a set-point, followed by a Boatman kill to eventually force a fifth set, 25-23.

Waelbroeck sniped a pair of kills to start off action in the decisive fifth set, as IUPUI leaped out to a 4-1.  Waelbroeck would add another, followed by a poor set and an attack error by the 'Dons to go in front, 7-2.  Fort Wayne would burn a timeout, but the Jags picked up another kill to extend their lead.  After switching sides, the Mastodons picked up three-straight points on three errors, making it 8-5.  Boatman and Fisher would pick up kills to extend the score, 10-6.  Fisher would strike twice, Walling would add a kill, and Waelbroeck would pick up a block to set up a match point, 14-7.  Fisher would seal it on a rifle cross court shot, taking the set 15-7.

The Jags will return to action Friday (Oct. 18) in the Jungle at 7 p.m. EST as the Jags host Omaha.
