INDIANAPOLIS – After successfully defending their home court in the first bout of their four-consecutive matches at home, the IUPUI volleyball team (8-14, 4-3) will welcome another tough test to the Jungle in the form of Fort Wayne (9-11, 5-2) Tuesday (Oct. 18) at 7 p.m. EST. The match will air live on IUPUI Live! and is available for free via IUPUIJags.com.
Coming off one of their best all-around showings this past Friday (Oct. 14), the Jags will look to build on their fourth-place standing in the Summit League as they face the third-place Mastodons. Having recently defeated Oral Roberts in four sets, the Jags finally saw their offense hit its stride, as the team combined to hit .311 in the victory. On the year, the team is hitting just .182.
In the match, the Jags were led by
Gabby Fisher with 23 kills, bringing her season total to 227.
Kori Waelbroeck put up 11 kills in the match, leading IUPUI on the year with 263. Her total ranks third in the Summit League, along with her 3.51 kills-per-set average.
Abby Boatman exploded for a career-high 10 total blocks in the match, raising her total to 80 and a Summit League third-best 1.13 blocks-per-set average.
A pivotal cog in the offensive machine, setter
Alexis Mapes continues to put up numbers in her senior season, logging 706 assists on a 9.41 average. She's also added 219 digs and 34 total blocks.
Recording back-to-back wins for the first time since Sep. 9-10, the Jags will face a Mastodons team that has proven to be somewhat of an anomaly this season. Fort Wayne has lost just twice this season in Summit League play, dropping a tough-fought five set match to first-place South Dakota on the road, and an upset straight-set sweep at the hands of Oral Roberts. The loss to the Golden Eagles came after the Jags victory over ORU this past Friday. The 'Dons have played the top half of the Summit League extremely tough, but have struggled at times with teams in the lower half. That includes going to five sets against the sixth and seventh-place North Dakota State and Omaha teams. Earlier in the season, Fort Wayne knocked off defending Summit League Champion Denver in straight-sets at home.
A historically loaded rivalry, IUPUI and Fort Wayne first faced each other all the way back on Oct. 24, 1979, in which the Mastodons were victorious, 2-1. Since then, Fort Wayne holds the all-time record, going 23-17 against the Jags. IUPUI has won five in a row against Fort Wayne, and six of their last seven. Four out of the last five matches have gone to at least four sets.
In their history, the teams have met each other just one time on the same date (Oct. 18), dating back to 2008 when IUPUI defeated the Mastodons in a five-set thriller. In that match, former Jag
Ashley Johnson picked up 16 kills with just one error, hitting .577 in the match.
Shari Bernhardt had 15 kills and 13 digs in a double-double effort, as the Jags won with the score 26-24, 20-25, 25-20, 26-28, 15-10.
