INDIANAPOLIS – The first match in a lengthy home-stay for IUPUI volleyball (7-14, 3-3), the Jaguars will welcome Oral Roberts (11-9, 3-3) to the Jungle Friday (Oct. 14) at 7 p.m. EST. The matchup features the fifth and sixth-place teams in the Summit League, as IUPUI looks to better its standings over the next two weeks at home.
This season, IUPUI is led by
Kori Waelbroeck, as the junior-lefty has 252 kills and 3.55 kills-per-set. Her 285.0 points ranks third in the Summit League, as senior-setter
Alexis Mapes also ranks third in the Summit with 657 assists. IUPU ranks second in the League with 153 blocks, averaging 2.15 blocks-per-set.
A traditionally troubling matchup for the Jags, Friday's meeting with Oral Roberts will mark the 38th time these two programs will face off. Historically lopsided, the Golden Eagles have a 32-5 record against the Jaguars, most recently dropping IUPUI in four sets at home last season (Oct. 2). The Jags would get redemption in the rematch, topping Oral Roberts at home in five sets (Nov. 1) last year. IUPUI is 2-1 in its last three contests against Oral Roberts. Six out of the last seven meetings have gone to at least four sets, with two of those going to five.
Winners of three-straight, the Golden Eagles posted a 3-1 record during a four-match homestay most recently. They started Summit League action by dropping their first two contests to North Dakota State and South Dakota. A five-set loss to Omaha spoiled their home debut, but the team has rallied since, dropping Western Illinois, South Dakota State and Denver. Their best stretch of the season came when the team won six out of seven matches, spanning four tournaments from Aug. 27 to Sep. 10. Outside hitter Laura Milos has been a juggernaut of the Summit League this season, tallying a League-high 370 kills and a monstrous 5.52 kills-per-set average. The Croatia-native has 938 attack attempts, 106 more than the next closest player in the Summit (Shalyn Greenhaw – Western Illinois). Compared to Waelbroeck, Milos has been set 235 more times.
This season, the Jaguars already witnessed senior-middle blocker
Logan Walling set the all-time record for total blocks and block assists, topping Tracy Bailey in both categories. Walling has brought her total blocks to 389, well past the initial record (375). With one more solo block, Walling will tie Bailey for second-most in program history (61).
Abby Boatman currently averages 1.04 blocks-per-set, which ranks third in the Summit League. The average, if it were to hold up, would be the third-best in IUPUI history, just edging out Angela Vinson (1.03) from the 2003 season. The sophomore is having a breakout season for the Jags, leading the team with 70 total blocks (tied for second in the League).
Friday's match is Favorite Professor Night at the Jungle, as several professors selected by the IUPUI volleyball team will be on hand for the match. Throughout the evening, the professors will be honored for their contributions to the growing experience for the IUPUI student-athletes.
