INDIANAPOLIS - The Cincinnati duo of Ryan Melink and Adam Wilson each had a goal and an assist as the Bearcats cruised past the shorthanded Jaguars, 3-0 at Carroll Stadium on Wednesday night.
Cincinnati improved to 7-4-1 on the season while IUPUI dropped to 1-11 in 2016.
Cincinnati took momentum early in the match, powering in a goal from point blank range in the tenth minute. After a corner kick, Melink tapped a pass to Aerin West, who drilled a shot past sophomore goalie
Josh Gray from inside the six-yard box. Just more than 12 minutes later, Wilson drove a shot from distance off the inside of the left post and into the net.
IUPUI squandered some first half chances, earning five corner kicks but finishing with just five shot attempts. Junior
Uriel Macias just missed a highlight reel finish when his bicycle kick from 10 yards out when right of target.
"I'm proud of our guys in that they come out every training session and every game and continue to work hard," Head Coach
Brian Barnett said. "I'm especially proud of (Macias) in that he really worked hard the full 90 minutes and we just weren't able to provide him any help in the attack."
Cincinnati capped the scoring in the 83rd minute when Melink went to the air to head a shot inside the far post, off a well delivered cross from Wilson.
UC closed with a 12-10 shot advantage and 7-4 edge in shots on goal. Gray ended with three saves and was aided by a second half team save as one of his teammates cleared a shot off the line off a restart. Junior
Pape Ndiaye attempted a game-high four shots, putting three on target.
Barnett's squad was limited to just two subs as seemingly half the roster was in street clothes due to injury on Wednesday night. Another, senior
Cristian Soto, sat out the contest after receiving a red card in the Jaguars recent loss to Denver.
"We've talked to the guys about taking advantage of the opportunities as they come to them," Barnett said. "I think our guys, from one all the way down the roster, do a good job of being ready when their number is called and that's not necessarily an easy thing to do when you're sitting with 11 losses on the season.
"They're continuing to come out and work on the little things to help make us a successful team."
On Wednesday, veteran
Carlos Albor became the 21st different Jaguar to start at least one match this season, earning the nod and playing 31 minutes.
The Jags will be back in action on Saturday, Oct. 15 when they trek west to Tulsa, Okla., to take on Oral Roberts at 8:00 p.m. Eastern. That match will be streamed live with links available on IUPUIJags.com.
