JAGS CAN'T SOLVE MAVS IN 3-1 SUMMIT LEAGUE ROAD LOSS

Junior Joshua Ayala nets his first goal of the season in defeat

OMAHA, Neb. - The road continued to be unkind to the IUPUI men's soccer team as the Jaguars were discarded at Omaha on Saturday night (Oct. 1), 3-1 at Caniglia Field. The Jags stumbled into a two-goal hole in the opening 18 minutes against the hard charging Mavs.

Omaha improved to 4-3-3 and 1-0 in Summit League play while IUPUI slid to 1-8 overall and 0-2 in league play.

IUPUI fell behind in the 11th minute when Seth Rinderknecht capitalized on the Mavs' second corner kick of the game's early going. Fazlo Alihodzic centered the restart to Rinderknecht, who redirected a shot past sophomore goalie Josh Gray for the game's first tally.

Less than seven minutes later, Gray was victimized by his own wrongdoing as he was issued a yellow card for pulling down an attacker inside the penalty area. On the ensuing penalty kick, Gray guessed right and dove left, getting a hand on Alihodzic's attempt, but was unable to keep it out of the net.

IUPUI was seemingly energized by the deficit though and immediately answered when junior Joshua Ayala struck gold from 20 yards out. Senior Cristian Soto played Ayala into space, allowing the Texas-native to sneak a shot inside the left post for his first score of the season and third of his collegiate career. UNO's starting goalie Joseph Ghitis was hurt on the play, thrusting reserve Ugo Tritz into duty.

Tritz was tested immediately as the Jaguars stayed on the attack for much of the remainder of the first half, but were ultimately unlucky. Freshman Pedro Valladao played a brilliant ball into Soto in the 29th minute, but the senior had his drive from in close rip off the crossbar and back on the field.

In the 32nd minute, junior Uriel Macias played a tricky volley towards the left post and freshman Alan Aguilar also tested Tritz with a shot just wide of the left upright in the 35th minute.

Omaha got separation early in the second half when another deep restart led to Alihodzic setting up Jacob Weiler's header goal.

IUPUI finished the match outshot 15-9 overall and 10-2 in shots on goal. Gray ended with six saves and junior Kayode Tyler had a team save when he cleared a Maverick attempt off the back line early in the match.

Soto led the attack with four attempts and Ayala, who had two assists against Northern Illinois earlier in the week, had a pair of shot attempts on Saturday.

IUPUI will dip back into non-conference action on Tuesday night (Oct. 4) when the Jags face SIUE in Edwardsville at 8:00 p.m. Eastern.
