JAGS THWARTED AT SIU-EDWARDSVILLE, 3-0

IUPUI slides to 1-9 on the 2016 season

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - The IUPUI men's soccer team were on the sour side of a non-conference tilt on Tuesday night (Oct. 4) as the Jaguars fell to SIUE at Korte Stadium, 3-0. The Jaguars trailed by only a goal at the break, but saw the host Cougars score a pair of second half insurance tallies in the shutout victory.

IUPUI fell to 1-9 on the year while SIUE won its third straight match to improve to 4-4-2.

SIUE's Mathias Ebbesen initiated the game's scoring in the 14th minute when he tallied from in close off an assist from Devyn Jambga.

However, IUPUI was still in the hunt and had quality first half chances from Uriel Macias and Cristian Soto to no avail. The second half saw the Jags waste some early corner kick opportunities and struggle to get in the attack against a notoriously stingy SIUE defense which had allowed just 10 goals all year.

Things went from bad to worse in the 67th minute when SIUE's Austin Ledbetter tucked a header just inside the near post off service from Mohamed Awad.

The Cougars scored the capper in the 75th minute on an odd turn of events. SIUE's Keegan McHugh sent an initial corner kick into play that was easily defender by the Jaguars. But a whistle from the referee stopped play and the hosts were then awarded a retake of the corner kick. The end result was Austin Polster's first career goal as he redirected a shot past sophomore goalie Josh Gray from in close.

The Jags had some insult added to injury in the 88th minute when it appeared a Nick Anderson to Macias combination would break the shutout, but the IUPUI attacker was denied his fourth score of the year because of an offsides whistle.

SIUE finished with a 13-5 shot advantage and 9-5 edge in corner kicks. The Cougars were also called for 15 of the game's 21 fouls, but the Jags were assessed four of the game's five yellow cards.

Statistically Macias led the IUPUI attack with two shot attempts while Gray collected five saves. The Jaguars were without sophomore back Ben Thornton, who led the team in minutes played and had started all nine matches coming into play.

IUPUI will return home to host nationally ranked Denver on Friday night (Oct. 7) in Summit League play. That match will kickoff at 7:00 p.m. and IUPUI students are admitted for FREE with a valid JagTag. Adult tickets are just $5 and may be purchased at the main entrance an hour from kickoff.
