TULSA, Okla. – The IUPUI women's basketball team used a huge fourth quarter from
Danielle Lawrence to get revenge on Oral Roberts (57-54) Saturday (Jan. 30) afternoon on the road. The Jags were beaten by the Golden Eagles (52-47) in Indianapolis less than a month ago. IUPUI improved to 15-7 (6-3) on the season while dropping ORU to 9-11 (6-2).
"Today was a toughness win for our program," Head Coach
Austin Parkinson said. We knew it was going to be a physical game and, in the second half, our kids responded by making all the hustle plays."
Lawrence led the way for the Jags with 23 points and six rebounds, including 17 of her 23 in the fourth quarter. She poured in 10 points from the free throw line on 10-for-12 shooting from the charity stripe. She's now 20-for-22 from the line in the Jags' last two contests.
"Danielle was outstanding tonight," Parkinson added. "She was aggressive and strong to the rim and she continues to shoot extremely well from the free throw line."
Senior
Shaquira Scott finished the game with 11 points and six rebounds. The senior carried IUPUI in scoring through the first three quarters before Lawrence took over in the fourth. Sophomore
Jenna Gunn added seven points while senior
Akilah Sims contributed six points and four rebounds.
Similar to the first meeting between IUPUI and ORU less than a month ago, a defensive battle ensued on Saturday afternoon. The Jags scored just 33 points through three quarters (and trailed by just one point) before pouring in 24 fourth quarter points.
At the start, the Jags jumped out to a quick 7-0 lead before the ORU offense woke up. A balanced scoring attack consisting of six scorers gave IUPUI a 13-11 lead after the first quarter. After holding a small advantage throughout the second, IUPUI's
Mikale Rogers scored her first points of the game on a three-point play to give the Jags a 26-23 lead. ORU netted a three just before the half to keep things all square at 26-all.
Neither team held more than a two-point advantage through the second half until a three from Lawrence gave IUPUI a 39-36 edge with just under eight minutes to play in the fourth quarter. Lawrence scored eight consecutive points for IUPUI in the fourth en route to a 44-39 edge. She continued to pour in 17 of her 23 points in the fourth quarter helping the Jags extend the lead to 50-40. ORU scrapped together a run down the stretch ending in a three at the buzzer to make the final score (57-54) appear closer than it was.
The Jags hit just one three in the game but were sensational from the free-throw line again (18-for-22) shooting 81.8 percent from the stripe. They were outshot and outrebounded (35-43) in the contest but committed just 10 turnovers compared to ORU's 16.
IUPUI will be in action again against Western Illinois next Saturday (Feb. 6) in Indianapolis at 3:00 p.m. ET.
