OFFENSE PROPELS VOLLEYBALL TO THREE-SET SWEEP OF MASTODONS

Jags hit .404 as they improve to 2-0 in Summit League play

INDIANAPOLIS – Three players hit above .500 on the night and collectively the IUPUI volleyball team hit .404 as the Jaguars moved to 2-0 in Summit League play with a sweep of Fort Wayne Tuesday night at The Jungle.

Kaitlyn Hickey and Kelly Wachtel were two of the three players that hit above .500 for the match hitting at a .571 clip and .529, respectively, as they finished with 14 and 10 kills.

"I think our offense just did a great job tonight. We only had seven hit errors the whole night so I think it was a great offensive effort more than anything," head coach Steve Payne said.

The Jags took command early and never really allowed the Mastodons to put a run together throughout the entire match. After siding out all 12 opportunities in set one, the Jags were able to finish the night siding out at an incredible 90 percent clip (40-of-44).

"I really didn't realize it until I looked at the sheet about siding out, but I think some of the drills we do in practice kind of relate to that," Payne said. "Our girls really cracked down pretty good, we had pretty good passing and our offense came through. To have that kind of percentage is really mind boggling."

In the first set, IUPUI and Fort Wayne were tied at three early on but after that it was all Jaguars. The Jags hit .530 in the first set en route to a 22-9 run to finish out the set, winning it 25-12.

IUPUI was led by Hickey and Gabby Fisher with five kills apiece in set one and Wachtel had four kills. IPFW hit only .062 in the first set and failed scored consecutive points in the set as the Jags went 12-for-12 on side outs.

Set two saw much closer action as neither team had a three-point lead until IUPUI took a 15-12 lead on a kill by Wachtel. The Jags scored four of the next six points to widen their margin to 19-14 thanks to three Fort Wayne errors. The Jaguars would finish off the second set with a 25-19 win on a Hickey kill.

Looking for the sweep the Jags got off to a strong in the third set. Two kills from Hickey and five IPFW attack errors pushed the advantage to 8-3, forcing a Fort Wayne timeout. Kills from four different Jags boosted the lead to 14-6, and from that point the outcome was never in doubt as they finished off a 25-12 win.

The win marked the fourth in a row for IUPUI over their in-state rivals and the sixth in the last eight meetings.

Up next for the Jaguars is their first Summit League road trip of the season, which begins on Friday, Oct. 2, at Oral Roberts. After the Jaguars and Golden Eagles square off, IUPUI meets Western Illinois on Sunday, Oct. 4.
