MILWAUKEE, Wis. – For the second time this season, the IUPUI volleyball team earned a victory over a team receiving votes in the AVCA Preseason Poll as the Jaguars picked up a 3-1 (25-21, 19-25, 25-22, 25-17) win over Wichita State Saturday afternoon at the Marquette Invitational.
Kaitlyn Hickey continued her impressive play for IUPUI (9-4) leading four Jags in double figures in kills with a match-high 22, while
Kori Waelbroeck,
Skylar Wright and
Logan Walling added 13, 11 and 10 kills, respectively.
The win for the Jaguars puts them on the doorstep of winning the Marquette Invitational after the Shockers defeated Marquette in five sets Friday evening. The Jags will go for the tournament title Saturday evening when they take on the Golden Eagles at 8 p.m. ET.
Defensively,
Courtney Halter reached 20 digs for the third straight match with 22, while
Jessica Helms and Hickey added 10 each to aid a 63-58 edge in digging for the Jaguars. Four total blocks each from
Abby Horn and Walling also helped IUPUI outblock Wichita State 11.0 to 8.5.
Despite falling behind 6-2 in the first set, the Jaguars were able to get back on track using a kill from Hickey and an ace from
Alexis Mapes to go in front, 14-11. Wichita State inched closer and five ties ensued before two Shockers attack errors put the Jags two points away from a first-set victory at 23-21. Two straight kills from Hickey ensued closing out a 25-21 opening-set win.
The Jags were in a strong position to go up two sets to none as they trailed by just one in set two at 19-18, thanks in part to seven kills from Hickey. However, Wichita State took six of the next seven points to win set two, 25-19, evening the match at one set apiece.
Out of the 10-minute break, Mapes got Waelbroeck, Walling, Wright and Horn involved offensively aiding an early run that put IUPUI in front, 13-9. After Wichita State closed within one at 13-12, four kills from four different Jags, an IUPUI block and a Shockers attack error widened the Jaguars margin to 19-13. A handful of Jags miscues allowed Wichita State to tie things up at 22-22, but IUPUI remained composed and kills from Wright and Waelbroeck and a block from Walling and Waelbroeck finished a 25-22 third-set win putting it in front two sets to one.
IUPUI jumped out to a 6-2 lead in set four only to have the Shockers fight back to knot things up at 13-13. Kills from Wright, Walling and Hickey moved the Jaguars back in front at 16-13, forcing a Shockers timeout. A triple block from Horn, Waelbroeck and Hickey pushed the IUPUI cushion to five at 20-15, and down the stretch Jags blocks and Wichita State errors resulted in the Jaguars pulling out a 25-17 win to earn a 3-1 win.
Up next for the Jags will be another meeting against a team receiving votes in the AVCA Poll in Marquette. The Jaguars and Golden Eagles are set to begin at 8 p.m. ET.
