DAYTON, Ohio – The IUPUI softball team extended its winning streak to eight games, only to have that streak snapped hours later as IUPUI split a Tuesday doubleheader at Wright State.
The Jags record moved to 31-13 overall, while the Raiders shifted to 17-30.
Pitching was the key in both games as IUPUI starter
Brooke Boetjer went 6.0 innings giving up just two hits to pick up her 20th win of the season in a 7-0 Jaguars win in the opener, before Wright State starter Ashley Sharp threw a complete-game, four-hitter for the Raiders to give them a 5-0 win in Game 2. Boetjer's six innings of shutout ball extended her scoreless streak to 15.0 innings.
IUPUI scored all of its seven game-one runs in the first three innings highlighted by a four-run second inning.
Maggie Good continued her torrid hitting as of late getting a RBI single in the first to score #Morgan Schlobohm, who reached via an error, before capping the second inning with another RBI single. Prior to Good's second-inning RBI base knock,
Ali Mosier and
Roni Patterson both had RBI hits with Patterson's bringing in two runs.
The good fortunes continued into the third inning for the Jags when Schlobohm brought in a run with a sacrifice fly before Patterson brought in her third run of the game with a RBI single during the next at bat.
Meanwhile, Boetjer gave up just one hit through five innings prior to encountering some trouble in the sixth. An IUPUI error to start the inning put a Raider on second, but a fielder's choice, strike out and a fly out left a runner stranded on third to keep the shutout in tact.
Nickole Finch entered in relief of Boetjer in the seventh and finished off the victory.
While the Jags seized control early in Game 1, it was Wright State who scored early in Game 2 putting a run on the board in the first.
A pair of home runs for WSU in the third widened its lead to 4-0, and then three singles in the fifth upped its margin to 5-0.
The IUPUI offense put runners on in each of the first three innings, but really never threatened throughout the game as it never was able to get a runner past second base ultimately resulting in the loss.
Up next for the Jaguars is a trip to Fargo, N.D., to take on Summit League leader North Dakota State. The Jags and Bison will play a doubleheader on Saturday, May 2, beginning at 1 p.m. ET.
