SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – Looking to finish the 2015 Mustang Classic with a win, the IUPUI softball team used a sixth-inning solo home run from
Ali Mosier to lift the Jaguars to a 2-1 win over Bryant at Bob Janssen Field.
The win secured a 4-1 record at the 2015 Mustang Classic, and upped IUPUI's record to 14-4 on the season – continuing the best start in the program's D-I era.
While Mosier delivered the late-inning heroics, the win wouldn't have been possible without another great performance in the circle from
Emili Escamilla. Escamilla posted her third complete game in her last four starts after striking out eight and giving up just three hits.
IUPUI got on the scoreboard first by manufacturing a run in the second inning. Consecutive singles from
Eryn Dillon and
Taylor Chitwood put runners on first and second with nobody out, and then a wild pitch moved both runners up a base. That wild pitch was important because two batters later, a
Megan Cory RBI ground out allowed Dillon to cross home plate and put IUPUI in front.
Bryant knotted the score at one when Bryant starter Elle Madsen hit a solo homer in the fourth, and in the circle Madsen retired 10 straight Jags from the third inning through the middle of the sixth until Mosier delivered the late dagger with a solo home run to place the Jags back in front, 2-1.
Needing just three outs to preserve the win, Escamilla forced a foul out, a ground out and a pop out to finish off the victory.
Up next will be a big test for the Jaguars when they travel to Evanston, Ill., for a doubleheader against Northwestern on Saturday, March 14.
