VERONA, Wisc. - The IUPUI men's cross country continued to ride the pack mentality in earning the program's best-ever finish at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional on Friday (Nov. 13). The Jaguars placed eighth overall against elite competition, moving up a spot from last year's ninth-place finish.

Michigan won the regional meet with 67 points, followed by Michigan State (88), Eastern Michigan (102), Notre Dame (127) and Indiana (141). Wisconsin (203) and Akron (209) also finished ahead of IUPUI, but the Jaguars claimed wins over in-state foes Purdue, Butler and Indiana State. Michigan's Mason Ferlic won the race in a time of 30:18.3, finishing two seconds ahead of second-place Matt McClintock from Purdue.

Junior Robert Murphy led the way, finishing at 31:32.1 for a 32nd-place finish and the sixth-fastest 10K in school history. Junior Damon Pruett, Dakota Dubbs and Peyton Reed also joined him among the top-50 finishers while senior Joey Zielinski was 52nd overall.

Pruett crossed at 31:43.3 to place 42nd and Dubbs ran a time of 31:52.0 in 46th. Reed, who led the Jaguars' in the race's early going, finished 49th at 31:54.7.

"I thought all our guys ran pretty well. Man for man, everyone that came through for us did well. No one ran exceptional, but we had a really solid race - definitely nothing to be ashamed of," IUPUI Head Coach Chuck Koeppen said. "All the teams that finished in front of us are good teams and we beat some pretty good teams. I'm really proud of how we did.

"Anytime you have the best finish in school history, that's something to be proud of. Looking ahead, these guys are only going to continue to get better. We had four or five guys in the forty or fifty range and next year you hope that they continue to improve and move up to the twenties."

Rookie Griffin Miller, running just his second career varsity race, was the meet's top finishing true freshman in a time of 32:22.0 to place 65th overall. Sophomore Connor Sorrells rounded out the seven entrants with a time of 33:13.1.

While the Jaguars ultimately fell short of the goal of reaching the NCAA Championships, IUPUI can still reflect on the best season in program history. IUPUI captured the program's second straight Summit League title and the team's first-ever Indiana Intercollegiates crown. Cominbed with the season opening win at Butler, IUPUI's three meet wins were also a school record.
