INDIANAPOLIS - North Dakota State's Lauren Miller scored a pair of goals, including the game-winner in the game's 64th minute as the visiting Bison picked off the Jaguars, 2-1 at Michael A. Carroll Stadium. North Dakota State (11-5-1, 6-0-1 Summit) claimed the top seed at the upcoming Summit League Tournament and the 2015 regular season title with the victory.
IUPUI (6-9-2, 1-5-1 Summit) got an equalizer goal from
Meghan Day in the 35th minute, but were blanked in the second half and fell for the third straight game.
NDSU took a quick lead as Miller slipped a left-footed shot past
Lauren Kulaga and sophomore goalie
Catherine Schmidt for the game's first goal in the fourth minute. Miller made a long run up the right-hand side, before getting a quick release past Schmidt for her league-best 14th goal of the year.
The Jaguars pulled even late in the half as Day scored her second career goal, thanks to an assist from
Krissy Kirkhoff. Kirkhoff put an initial attempt on frame, only to see NDSU goalie Sierra Bonham make a nifty kick save to clear the ball. However, the ball came free to Day near the top of the 18, where she blasted a drive into the center of the goal. Day had had a similar look earlier in the match, but was unable to get the drive through traffic.
The game stayed tied until early in the second half when Miller had a brilliant finish for the game-winner. Amy Yang played a pass to Miller on the left side as she spun off of IUPUI defender
Maddie Riedford. After breaking free, she slotted a shot just inside the right post for the go-ahead score.
IUPUI outshot NDSU 22-19 and continued to build opportunities, but was unable to finish. Freshman
Maryna Clark had a well placed shot on target late in the match and
Sarah Jacobs rolled a brilliant cross through traffic in the closing minutes, but IUPUI was unable to capitalize. The pass rolled just ahead of
Tori Minnich and
Catherine Raster's defender didn't allow a clean look. The ball came back to Kirkhoff, who hit a bullet right at Bonham, and Raster's header on the rebound flew over the crossbar.
Both Bonham and Schmidt recorded eight saves each as the free wheeling match saw the two sides fire a combined 41 shots. Miller led all players with nine tries while Raster and
Kalli Shepler-Tucker had five each for IUPUI.
The Jaguars will cap the 2015 season on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. at Carroll Stadium when the Jaguars host South Dakota State. Admission is free of charge while standard university parking rates will apply. IUPUI will recognize the senior class immediately following Sunday's match.
