INDIANAPOLIS - The IUPUI women's soccer team put a bow on the 2015 season with a hard fought 1-1 tie with South Dakota State at Michael A. Carroll Stadium on Sunday (Nov. 1). The season closed as it entered - with a draw - as IUPUI finished the year with a 6-9-3 mark and a 1-5-2 posting in Summit League play. Following the match, the senior quintet of
Sierra Bryant,
Meghan Day,
Grace Perkowitz,
Lauren Kulaga and
Kalli Shepler-Tucker was honored on the field and celebrated by fans, friends and family.Â
For 110 minutes prior, the Jaguars went toe-to-toe with one of the league's best, scoring first when
Krissy Kirkhoff buried her 12th score of the year in the game's ninth minute. Junior
Catherine Raster started the play by banging a drive towards the SDSU goal, that resulted in
Alyssa Fox tapping a pass to Kirkhoff. Kirkhoff did the rest, driving a shot past the out of position SDSU goalie Nicole Inskeep from the top of 18 for her final score of the season, while Fox collected her second assist of the year.
The score came just moments after Raster had hit the crossbar in the third minute with a brilliant strike.
SDSU (10-5-3, 5-1-2 Summit) got even in the 17th minute as Brittany Jensen scored for the second time in as many games. Diana Potterveld slotted a pass to Jensen, who tallied past
Catherine Schmidt from just outside the six-yard box.
SDSU's best second half scoring chance came on the free kick in the 70th minute from just inside midfield. Jennie Scislow drove a ball into the middle of the box, which Schmidt allowed to bounce in front of her. While retreating to her endline, Schmidt tipped the bounding ball just over the bar for a corner kick for one of her five saves in the match.
Overtime almost saw some Kirkhoff heroics end it in the 109th minute as her sliding shot from the left side glanced off the top of the bar and out of play.
IUPUI finished with a 20-18 shot advantage and 8-6 edge in shots on frame. Raster fired a team-high five shots and freshman
Maryna Clark had four attempts off the bench, putting three on target. Junior goalie
Nicole Kulovitz was pressed into action in the final minute of the match as Schmidt left injured on a hard challenge on a 50-50 ball.
Inskeep made seven saves for the Jackrabbits, who will proceed to the four-team Summit League Tournament.
The senior class was recognized immediately after, having played more than 300 games combined in an IUPUI uniform and earned a collected grade point average of better than 3.30. Shepler-Tucker finishes her career as the program's all-time leader with 16 assists while Kulaga ranks second all-time, having made 76 career starts. Perkowitz closed her career with eight goals, including four game-winners, while both Bryant and Day have been key contributors. Bryant was a two-year starter before her 2015 season was cut short by an injury suffered in game three. Day missed her first two seasons at IUPUI due to injury, but became a steadying influence in the midfield last season and finished her career with two goals and four assists.
