FORT WAYNE, Ind. - IUPUI set a school record with 19 blocks and senior
Kaitlyn Hickey hit a career milestone in a tough five set victory against Fort Wayne.
Neither team hit well, IUPUI (17-7, 8-2) only hit .198, but forced Fort Wayne (6-19, 3-6) in to a .142 clip with 43 attack errors. After recording a previous season-high 15 blocks the night before, the defense for the Jags helped lead the team as IUPUI posted a school record 19 blocks. Redshirt sophomore
Abby Horn and junior
Logan Walling led the way with nine blocks apiece and sophomore #Kori Waelbroeck posted eight blocks.
Fort Wayne finished with 13 more kills (74-61) than the Jaguars, but made 19 more errors (43-24) than the guests, largely because of the IUPUI block.
"We picked up the pace on the blocking again," said head coach
Steve Payne. "We knew where they were going with the ball and Abby [Horn], Logan [Walling] and Kori [Waelbroeck] set a great block and showed great skill."
Even with the low hitting percentage, the Jags saw four players reach double-digit kills. Hickey led the way with 18 kills, Waelbroeck had 13, senior #Skylar Wright posted 12, and Walling added 10. Hickey and Wright also posted double-doubles with 14 and 15 digs respectively.
In the third set, Hickey had her tenth dig of the night, giving her 1,500 for her career. The 1,500 digs, to go along with the 1,500 kills made Hickey the first player to reach the career milestone in IUPUI and Summit League history.
Set one was back-and-forth with multiple ties. With the score tied at 18, Fort Wayne went on a 7-3 run to end the set 25-21.
In the second set the 'Dons had an early lead at 7-6 but IUPUI took control, tying the game at 7-all and won 11 of the next 16 points to take an 18-12 lead. Fort Wayne battled back to within three at 22-19 but the Jags held on to tie the match with a 25-22 set win.
After the break, the close action continued with the first three-point lead belonging to IUPUI at 13-10. Fort Wayne came back to take the lead at 19-16 but allowed the Jags back in the set. With the score tied at 25, Fort Wayne won the third with a score of 28-26 to take a 2-1 set lead.
Needing to win set four to stay alive, the Jags found themselves down 5-1 early. Fort Wayne maintained the lead until, with the score 18-13 in favor of Fort Wayne, the Jags went on an 8-1 run behind
Alexis Mapes' service, to take a 21-19 lead. Fort Wayne was able to tie the game at 23 but two attack errors gave IUPUI the set win at 25-23.
In a winner takes all fifth set, IUPUI found themselves down 7-4 but tied the match at 10. From there, the Jags won five of the next seven points, including kills by Walling and Hickey to end the match 15-12.
"We have shown great resiliency before. The girls did a great job coming back," said Payne. "Down 2-1 and down four points in the fourth set the girls kept fighting and fighting. It was great to see."
The Jags will be on the road for their next match Friday, Oct. 30, when they take on the South Dakota State Jackrabbits and former IUPUI assistant coach Nicole Cirillo in Brookings, S.D..
