MACOMB, Ill. - The IUPUI women's soccer team rallied for a 3-1 win at Western Illinois on Sunday (Oct. 18), giving the Jaguars their first Summit League victory of the season. Sophomore
Krissy Kirkhoff scored a pair of second half goals, including the game-winner, and freshman
Maryna Clark added late insurance in the victory. Junior
Catherine Raster assisted on both of Kirkhoff's goals and sophomore
Catherine Schmidt earned the win in net, registering seven saves.
IUPUI (6-6-2, 1-2-1 Summit) trailed at the break 1-0 after Skyler Jessop scored in the 21st minute, but the second half was all Jaguars.
"Kalli, Lauren, Grace and Meghan really stepped it up today," Kirkhoff said. "They talked to us at halftime when we were down 1-0 and told us what we needed to do for a win.
"Maryna did a great job and scored her first of many goals. We really brought it in the second half."
Kirkhoff spearheaded the offensive effort, bringing the Jags even in the 50th minute with her team-high ninth goal of the season. Raster set up the play by rolling a pass into danger, leading to Kirkhoff blasting a shot into the upper-left corner of the net. The same duo connected on a similar play less than 13 minutes later, with Kirkhoff again scoring into the left side of the net.
Clark capped the scoring with her first collegiate goal coming in the 80th minute, springing loose for a breakaway goal against WIU (2-11) goalie Victoria Kappel.
IUPUI outshot the hosts 16-15 with both Kirkhoff and
Kalli Shepler-Tucker attempting four apiece. Raster attempted three in 70 minutes of action and upped her season total of assists to three. Kappel made three saves in the loss.
With her 10 goals, Kirkhoff becomes the fourth player in school history to score double-digits in a season, joining Karrie Reising (1998, 2000) Tara Latella (2000) and Megan Hock (2009). It was her second multi-goal game of the season and fourth of her college career. Her 27 points this season are six away from tying the program's single-season record of 33, achieved by Latella in 2000.
The Jaguars will return to action next week at South Dakota (Oct. 23) and in a regionally televised contest at Denver (Oct. 25).
