VERMILLION, S.D. - South Dakota's Kasha Meyer scored on a header in the 87th minute to send the host Coyotes to a rain soaked 2-1 win over IUPUI at the USD Soccer Complex on Friday afternoon (Oct. 23). Meyer's goal, her first of the season, capped a come-from-behind win as IUPUI had built a 1-0 halftime lead.
"It's frustrating," IUPUI Head Coach
Chris Johnson said. "We had our opportunities and just didn't put them away. It's not as though it's the same people or we're making the same mistakes, but we just didn't get the job done today.
"We got the early goal and really took it to them, but in hindsight, it could've been two or three goals and then it's a different game."
IUPUI (6-7-2, 1-3-1 Summit) leaned hard on the USD defense in the game's early going before finally going in front in the 18th minute. Senior
Kalli Shepler-Tucker rolled her school record 16th career assist to
Krissy Kirkhoff, stationed at the top of the box. The sophomore scoring leader did the rest, turning on a defender before aiming a shot inside the right post for her team-high 11th score of the season. It was her fifth goal in as many games in Summit League play.
The lead held as conditions deteriorated, ultimately leading to the teams having to clear the field with 7:42 left before halftime due to lightning. Play was halted for more than an hour before resuming under a steady rain.
"I wouldn't say the break affected us much," Johnson said. "We were on them early and then they were kind of on us right before the break. I thought we came back out with good energy and started the second half pretty well. The break didn't necessarily change anything we were doing. We just didn't get it done.
"We got shots and created chances."
USD (6-11, 3-3 Summit) pulled even in the 59th minute on a restart as Brittany Baker fed a pass to Corey Strang, who headed home her fifth score of the season past sophomore goalie
Catherine Schmidt.
The game-winner came off a corner kick as Meyer got a head to Taylor Nivala's service with just less than four minutes left in regulation.
IUPUI outshot the Yotes 9-8 overall and 5-3 on frame. Strang led all players with four shot attempts while Shepler-Tucker tried a team-high three shots from her midfield position. Sydney Hardin made four saves in goal for USD in the victory. The Jaguars played without forward
Maryna Clark, who suffered an injury in training yesterday.
"We could've used her today as she's shown that she's someone who can create chances and beat defenders," Johnson said. "It essentially ended up being Krissy and Cat (Raster) against their backs."
IUPUI will continue the road trip on Sunday (Oct. 25) when the Jaguars take on Denver in a regionally televised contest. Sunday's game will be broadcast on Altitude with kickoff scheduled for 12:00 p.m. MT (2:00 p.m. Eastern).
