OMAHA, Neb. – IUPUI bounced back from last night's defeat with a 3-0 road win over Omaha at Sapp Fieldhouse on Saturday night (Oct. 17).
The Jags (15-7, 6-2), were led by
Kori Waelbroeck with 14 kills and
Kelly Wachtel added 11 while hitting a team high .733.
Kaitlyn Hickey finished one kill away from a double-double with nine kills and a team high 15 digs.
"[Kelly] Wachtel really came through the whole match for us with 11 kills on 15 swings and no errors," said head coach
Steve Payne "Kori [Waelbroeck] was also great on the right side tonight."
IUPUI was solid on defense holding Omaha (9-11, 4-3), to just a .100 hitting percentage on the night.
"Our block lined up pretty well. We forced them in to hitting some bad shots," said Payne.
In the first set tied at four, the Jags opened up a lead going on a 14-3 run to take a 17-7 lead. Kills by
Abby Horn,
Logan Walling, Hickey, Waelbroeck and Wachtel highlighted the run for IUPUI.
With the score at 21-9 Omaha made a run, scoring six straight points, but Waelbroeck ended the run with a kill and IUPUI went on to take the first set 25-18.
IUPUI started out strong in the second set taking an early 11-2 lead including a streak of five kills from five different Jags. The Jags continued to dominate set two until a four point run from Omaha made the score 18-12 and forced an IUPUI timeout. After the timeout IUPUI would close out the set scoring seven of the next eight points to take a 2-0 lead in to the intermission.
After hitting only .189 in the first set the Jags hit .355 in set two, while holding Omaha to .079 in the first and .030 in the second set.
Coming out of the break, the play was back and forth with the teams trading the lead and IUPUI taking the first three-point lead of the set at 15-12 after a block from Horn and Wachtel. Omaha came right back with three points of their own to tie the game at 16, but with the score tied at 18, IUPUI went on a 7-2 run capped by an ace by
Ashley Hacker to win set three 25-20 and earn the sweep.
"Tonight was great for the team. We are fighting for the number one spot in the conference," said Payne. "The girls do a really good job of bouncing back from a loss."
IUPUI comes back home Friday, Oct. 23, to take on Western Illinois at the Jungle at 7 p.m.
