MEN'S SOCCER TO TANGLE WITH WRIGHT STATE ON SUNDAY

Jaguars seeking first win of the year

9/6/2014 7:21:00 AM

DAYTON, Ohio - The IUPUI men's soccer team will hit the road seeking its first win of the 2014 season when the Jaguars take on Wright State at Alumni Field in Dayton on Sunday (Sept. 7) at 5:00 p.m.. IUPUI (0-2) is coming off back-to-back road losses at Bowling Green and Butler while Wright State (2-0-1) is undefeated to start the year.

The Jaguars got a stalwart effort in goal from sophomore Christian Lomeli at Butler on Wednesday night, but yielded a first half goal and ultimately fell 1-0 to the Bulldogs. IUPUI's best offensive chance of the match was late in the first half when freshman Emmanuel Usen hit a header just wide of target. Junior Lance Davis and Usen have keyed the Jaguars' attack this season, leading the squad with four shots apiece. Lomeli has a 0.77 goals against average and seven saves while junior Eduardo Cortes has a 2.86 GAA and seven stops in his lone appearance.

"This is another opportunity for us to see a quality opponent on the road," IUPUI Head Coach Isang Jacob said. "As it turns out, our preseason and early season schedule is a very tough group of teams. Wright State is always a strong side and they showed that by getting a result against Kentucky.

"Our goal is to continue to work to get better as a team. We've got a lot of young kids on the team, but they're determined to work to improve and continue to grow."

The Raiders opened the year with a 1-0 win over Kentucky before playing Cincinnati to a 1-1 draw. Most recently, Wright State blanked Robert Morris by a 2-0 count at Alumni Field. Four different WSU players have a goal to start the year while the Raider defense has allowed just one goal in three games. Goalie Tyler Blackmer has a 0.31 goals against average and 11 saves, having played every minute in net.

IUPUI is just 3-13 all-time against Wright State as the two teams have squared off every season since the Jaguars joined the Division I ranks in 1998. The Jaguars are 0-7 in road games at WSU and have lost three straight to the Raiders. Last season, Wright State beat the Jaguars 2-0 at Carroll Stadium behind goals from Jacob Stovall and Chris Dupont. Blackmer made three saves to earn the shutout.

The Jaguars' last win in the series was a 2-1 win on Oct. 26, 2010 as Nate Ohmer and Ryan Robinson scored for the Jaguars. Alex Mannen earned the win in net with three saves.
