FARGO, N.D. –
Kaitlyn Hickey put down 21 kills and added 11 digs, and
Meredith Farkas served up five aces leading the IUPUI volleyball team to a 3-0 (25-21, 26-24, 25-22) win over North Dakota State Sunday afternoon.
The win completed the two-game road sweep to start Summit League play after IUPUI (8-9; 2-0 Summit) picked up a five-set win over Omaha on Friday.
Hickey's 21 kills tied for the fourth-most kills in program history in a three-set match falling two kills shy of the record. Not only did Hickey reach 20 kills in a three-set match for the first time in her career, but she hit .463 to lead the squad.
Neither team could create much separation from one another in the opening set until kills from three different players and an ace from
Beth Howard helped IUPUI turn a one-point lead into a five-point cushion, 19-14. The lead never dipped below three the rest of the set and a Hickey kill closed out a 25-21 first-set win.
NDSU took three-point leads on two different occasions in the beginning stages of set two only to have its second three-point cushion evaporate following an IUPUI run in which it took eight of 10 points. During the spurt, Farkas had two kills and a pair of aces to give the Jaguars a 17-14 lead. The Bison clawed back and evened the score at 18-18 and six more ties ensued with the last at 24-24. However, a Farkas ace and a block from
Logan Walling and Hickey secured a hard-fought 26-24 second-set win.
Similar to set two, the Bison took a three-point lead at 12-9 only to see it disappear. After the Jags tied the score at 14-14, kills from Walling and Hickey coupled with an ace from Farkas opened a 17-14 lead forcing NDSU to use a timeout. The lead grew to six at 22-16, but the Bison put together one final rally and knotted the score at 22-22. Despite NDSU seizing the momentum, the Jags held strong and used a kill from Hickey, a Bison error, and a kill from Wachtel to close out the 25-22 third-set win to capture the three-set sweep.
IUPUI returns to The Jungle for the first time since Sept. 17 when it welcomes South Dakota for a 7 p.m. match on Friday, Oct. 3.
