MEN'S SOCCER TO BATTLE BUTLER ON WEDNESDAY NIGHT

Match to kickoff at 7:00 p.m. at the Butler Bowl

9/2/2014 9:17:00 AM

INDIANAPOLIS - The IUPUI men's soccer team will continue the non-conference slate on Wednesday (Sept. 3) night when the Jaguars take on crosstown rival Butler at 7:00 p.m. at the Butler Bowl. The two sides played to a 2-2 draw at Michael A. Carroll a season ago.

"Butler's a really well coached team and is off to a great start to the year," IUPUI Head Coach Isang Jacob said. "We're going to continue to make some changes to what we're doing in an effort to be more successful, both offensively and defensively. The boys are working hard and continuing to improve, which is the goal at this point in the year. At the end of the day, we need to be playing our best soccer by the time conference rolls around."

IUPUI (0-1) dropped its season opener at Bowling Green last weekend by a 2-0 count while Butler (1-0-1) recently won Ohio State's Bert and Iris Wolstein Classic with a 2-0 win over Canisius and a 2-2 draw with OSU. Jeff Adkins was named Tournament MVP after scoring a pair of goals over the weekend.

Junior Lance Davis led the IUPUI attack with three shot attempts at BGSU while freshmen Emmanuel Usen and Jacob Singer had two each. Junior Eduardo Cortes yielded both goals in just more than 60 minutes of action, recording seven saves. Sophomore Christian Lomeli was flawless over the final 27 minutes, holding the host Falcons off the scoreboard.

Last season, Butler jumped out to a two-goal lead before the Jaguars stormed back in the second half. Davis scored in the 60th minute to cut the deficit in half and then-freshman Jonny Williams knotted the match in the 81st minute, thanks to a Cristian Soto assist. Soto nearly ended the match when he had a shot rip off the post in the 104th minute from nearly 30 yards out.

Cortes made four saves in that contest.

IUPUI is 2-10-2 all-time against Butler and 2-8-2 in the program's Division I era. The last Jaguars' win was a 3-0 decision at Kuntz Stadium on Oct. 4, 2011. IUPUI is 0-5-2 all-time in road games versus the Bulldogs.
