Box Score (.pdf)MURRAY, Ky. - Murray State's Julie Mooney scored three times, including the game-winner in the 61st minute in leading the host Racers to a 3-1 win over the Jaguars at Cutchin Field on Friday afternoon (Sept. 19). The hat trick was the first of Mooney's career and she became the ninth player in school history to score three times in a single match.
Mooney put MSU (3-5) in front in the 37th minute when she drilled a shot from the top of the 18 off a feed from teammate Taylor Stevens. The Racers' 1-0 lead held until halftime, but sophomore
Tori Minnich pulled the Jaguars' even in the 55th minute.
The Jaguars' top scorer,
Krissy Kirkhoff, set up the play by crossing a pass to the middle of the MSU box. From there, Minnich blasted a shot into the upper right corner for her second score of the 2014 season.
From that point on, it was all Mooney.
Mooney scored again off a Stevens assist in the 61st minute and finished the day's work in the 83rd minute, thanks to a Pavlina Nepokojova assist. Her final two goals came from in close against IUPUI freshman goalie
Catherine Schmidt.
Schmidt finished with a season-high seven saves in 90 minutes work. Murray State dominated the run of play, outshooting IUPUI 17-5 and earning an 8-2 edge on corner kicks. Mooney and Harriet Withers led MSU with five shots each while Kirkhoff, The Summit League leader in shot attempts, had a team-high three tries for the Jaguars.
Freshman Shelby Haworth earned the win in net for MSU, making one save.
