INDIANAPOLIS - After pulling even in the closing minutes, the IUPUI women's soccer team suffered a heartbreaking 2-1 loss at Butler on Sunday afternoon (Sept. 14), as BU's Shannon McDevitt scored in the game's final minute. McDevitt capitalized on the Bulldogs' 11th corner kick of the game as Maria Collica dropped the restart on the Jaguars' six-yard box, resulting in the game-winner from in close.

IUPUI (2-5-2) had just made it a 1-1 game in the 87th minute on freshman Krissy Kirkhoff's fourth goal of the year. The Jaguars strung together a series of passes, culminating in Meghan Day sending the ball to Kalli Shepler-Tucker. Shepler-Tucker angled a nice lead pass to Kirkhoff, who drilled a shot inside the left post from nearly 18 yards out, tying the score. Both Day and Shepler-Tucker earned their second assists of the season on the play.

"I was very excited about our chances after we tied the game up. I thought if we could get this thing to overtime, we could get some people back in the game and recenter ourselves a little bit and do what we had to do to put this game away," IUPUI Head Coach Chris Johnson said. "Unfortunately, I think there may have been some girls who were a little more tired than what they thought and just didn't get organized in the back like we needed to.

"That was a disappointing way to end the game. There were times today where we kind of displayed a lack of discipline on the field. In the first half at the get-go of the game, we didn't come out and play like we're capable of playing. As we move forward, we have to become more disciplined about what we're trying to do."

Butler (4-4) built a 1-0 lead very early, scoring on a Serina Kashimoto's finish in the fourth minute. After a quick restart, Kashimoto found herself free on the left side and slotted a shot past Kulovitz for the game's first goal. The host Bulldogs kept the heat on the Jaguars throughout the first half, including earning a penalty kick opportunity in the 37th minute. BU's Elise Kotsakis took the kick, but Kulovitz read it right and dove to her left to smother the opportunity. Moments later, Kulovitz snuffed out a Randi DeLong drive from in close for one of her six first half saves.

IUPUI had just one first half shot attempt as Shepler-Tucker put a try on target from 30 yards out in the ninth minute.

The second half saw the Jaguars begin to find some creases as Tori Minnich had an early attempt sail just wide of the right post and Taylor Heidorn floated a shot on frame from distance, testing BU's Jayne Heinrich in goal. Like Kulovitz, freshman Catherine Schmidt was solid in goal in the second half, making four stops, including a pair from point blank range.

"I thought Nicole did a great job in the net and made some big saves and saving a PK too," Johnson said. "The ball that went in the goal was a tough goal there. Overall, I thought (Nicole) did a great job in that period. I thought a lot of girls came back and helped out defensively and we weren't giving away as many dangerous opportunities as they were kind of creating."

The loss dropped the Jaguars to 3-9-1 all-time against the Bulldogs.

The Jaguars will return to action on Friday, Sept. 19 when they head south to take on Murray State at 3:00 p.m. in Murray, Ky.. IUPUI will cap the two-game weekend on Sunday (Sept. 21) when they host Indiana State at 1:00 p.m. at Carroll Stadium. That game will be streamed live on IUPUI LIVE! on IUPUIJags.com and will precede the men's match with Northern Kentucky, slated for 4:00 p.m. at Carroll.
