VOLLEYBALL WINS ANNUAL ALUMNI GAME

Jags complete their lone exhibition before starting the season on Aug. 29

INDIANAPOLIS – The IUPUI volleyball team squared off against its alumni on Saturday evening in the Jags lone exhibition match prior to the start of the 2014 season and came away victorious winning all four sets.

Head coach Steve Payne rotated lineups throughout the match showing off different looks and all 14 players who dressed saw action, including true freshmen Ashley Hacker, Kori Waelbroeck, Gabby Fisher and Jessica Helms who hit the floor for the first time as Jaguars.

"I enjoy this match every year because it gives us a chance to see our kids on the floor in a different setting than practice," Payne said. "We mixed around our lineups a bit and there were some things I liked and there are some things we need to tune up before we start our season next week."

With the graduation of the program's all-time assists leader in Alexis Meeks, the Jags will be looking to Alexis Mapes and Ashley Hacker to step into the setter's role this season and both rotated as the primary setter for both teams on Saturday.

"Alexis is coming in with one year of watching Alexis Meeks run the offense and she has come back this year ready to go," Payne said. "Ashley adds some height to our front row so we have different options between the two of them."

The Jaguars came away with a 25-17 victory in the opening set before facing some resistance from the alumni in the second set. The Alumni Team sprinted out to an early lead only to see their lead quickly disappear before eventually dropping the set 25-23. From that point, IUPUI cruised to a 25-16 third-set win before taking set four, 25-7.

The alumni team consisted of Katie Hahn, Rebekah Palikan O'Brien, Erin Jones Brooks, Lauren Thompson, Moriah Fair, Kalyse Reimbold, Erica Kulma Lewis, Bri Hewitt, Kelsey Hoefer and Kortni Wright.

"As always, we had a great alumni turnout and it's great seeing all of them come back and support us," Payne added.
