GREEN BAY, Wisc. - The IUPUI women's soccer team fell into an early two-goal hole and never fully recovered as the Jaguars' opened the 2014 campaign with a 3-1 loss at Green Bay on Friday (Aug. 24). Senior Taylor Heidorn scored the Jaguars' lone goal on a penalty kick late in the first half before the host Phoenix added a second half insurance score. Sophomore goalie Nicole Kulovitz, making her first career start in goal, made seven stops in 45 minutes work before giving way to Catherine Schmidt. Schmidt made two second half stops in her collegiate debut.

"We did not play very well or come out very strong," IUPUI Head Coach Chris Johnson said. "It was pretty warm out here today and kind of slippery grass, but we were not as tough as we needed to be in terms of adjusting to the circumstances around us. We gave up two goals pretty quick, largely on being young and not very tough.

"Nicole made several pretty good saves to keep us in there."

Heidi Hartmann scored twice for Green Bay (1-0), including the game-winner in the game's ninth minute. Chandra Eigenberger put the Phoenix in front in the seventh minute, receiving a pass from Emily Friedl before poking a shot past Kulovitz in the early going. Less than three minutes later, Hartmann scored her first of two goals, getting free on a breakaway before beating Kulovitz to the far post.

IUPUI (0-1) cut the lead in half in the 31st minute when Heidorn capitalized on a penalty kick opportunity for her tenth career goal. In doing so, she became just the eighth player in school history to reach double-digit goals scored for her career. Freshman Krissy Kirkhoff setup the PK opportunity, getting in behind the Green Bay defense before being pulled down in the box for the Jaguars' first score.

"The second unit came on and was a lot more dangerous (offensively)," Johnson said. "We had some other nice build ups, but just didn't get shots off. In the second half, we did a better job with possession and keeping the ball, but again, we didn't get a lot of shots off."

The Jaguars had chances to draw even early in the second half, but ultimately yielded a penalty kick opportunity to Hartmann, who scored to make it 3-1. IUPUI was unable to muster much offensively down the stretch and was outshot 15-5 for the match.

"Tori (Minnich) and Krissy were kind of dangerous all day and did a good job up there. Sierra (Bryant) came in and played in the back line and did a good job today as well. We'll get back together, regroup a little bit and continue to move forward."

Hartmann led all players with five shot attempts while Green Bay goalie Nastacia Behle made two saves in the victory.

The Jaguars will cap the two-game road trip on Sunday when they take on a second straight Horizon League for in Valparaiso. That match is slated to begin at 2:00 p.m. Eastern from VU's Brown Field.
