FOX HELPS JAGS TO 1-1 PRESEASON DRAW AT BALL STATE

IUPUI earns exhibition road tie at Ball State on Saturday (Aug. 16)

8/16/2014 7:28:00 PM

MUNCIE, Ind. - The IUPUI women's soccer team earned a 1-1 draw in its lone exhibition match to start the 2014 season on Saturday (Aug. 16), playing Ball State even at Briner Sports Complex. Sophomore Alyssa Fox had the Jaguars' lone goal, scoring in the game's 33rd minute.

Being preseason, the two teams opted to play three 30-minute periods and no overtime.

"It was a good performance overall," IUPUI Head Coach Chris Johnson said. "The scoreboard had the shots 11-10 (in BSU's favor) and that was probably accurate. We played 23 players and all had a pretty good showing except one freshman.

"I was very pleased with the energy and intensity we played with."

BSU jumped on top in the 17th minute when Jasmine Moses headed a shot off a free kick from teammate Elaina Musleh, beating sophomore goalie Nicole Kulovitz. After the Cardinals held the lead through one period, Fox pulled the Jaguars even at the start of the second with an indirect free kick goal, set up by junior Kalli Shepler-Tucker

The goal was a welcome sight for the Jaguars, who scored 15 goals in 19 games a season ago. Fox scored twice as a freshman while Shepler-Tucker was second on the squad with four assists a season ago.

Freshman goalie Catherine Schmidt, who started the second period, helped keep the score knotted by stonewalling a shot from BSU's Lauren Hall late in the second stanza.

Schmidt and Kulovitz split the final 30-minute stanza in goal with each logging approximately 45 minutes apiece.

IUPUI will open the regular season on Friday, Aug. 22 when the Jaguars head north to take on Green Bay at 4:00 p.m. Eastern. The two-game trip will conclude at Valparaiso on Sunday, Aug. 24 at 2:00 p.m.. IUPUI played both teams evenly a season ago, gaining a 1-1 draw against UWGB and a 0-0 tie against Valpo, both at the on-campus Michael Carroll Stadium.
