CHICAGO - Former IUPUI soccer standout
Joshio Sandoval is succeeding in the professional ranks, starring for the Professional Arena Soccer League (PASL) Chicago Mustangs. The Mustangs are currently 15-0 on the season and are the league's last remaining undefeated team.
Sandoval prepped at nearby Hammond High School and played his first season at Calumet St. Joseph before playing three seasons for the Jaguars. He was a Second Team All-Summit League selection as a senior in 2012 after starting all 18 matches and missing just eight minutes the entire year.
Since joining the professional ranks, Sandoval has moved to defender and helped the Mustangs qualify for the semifinals of the PASL and U.S. Open Cup. This year he's appeared in all 15 matches, contributing three goals and an assist.
The Mustangs will host the finals, known as the Ron Newman Cup, at the Sears Centre Arena in Hoffman Estates, Ill., on Mar. 15-16. This year, they have outscored their foes by a 179-77 margin, going 7-0 at home and 8-0 on the road.
The PASL started play in 2008-09 with eight teams and today the PASL-Premier serves as its official developmental league. The league has since grown to 20 teams, spanning three divisions.
