EAST LANSING, Mich. – The IUPUI women's basketball team was within single digits with seven minutes to go, but a late spurt by #15/17 Michigan State sent the Spartans to a 64-45 victory over the Jaguars Sunday afternoon at the Breslin Center.
Shanika Maddox led the way with eight points and 10 rebounds, while
Mikale Rogers added nine points and five boards, but Michigan State's duo of Aerial Powers and Tori Jankoska combined for 39 points, 16 rebounds and 11 assists to lead Michigan State.
The loss dropped the Jaguars to 1-2, with both losses coming to ranked opponents, while MSU improved to 2-1.
"Today was a positive step forward for our basketball team. We played sound defense and boxed out well," head coach
Austin Parkinson said. "Shanika and Mikale both established themselves on the block, which is important for our team. Until we get our turnovers under control, we will continue to struggle on the offensive end."
Both teams struggled to get off to a good start as both IUPUI and Michigan State committed six turnovers in the opening six minutes and combined to shoot 2-of-13 from the field leaving the score tied at 2-2.
The shooting woes continued for the Jags as it found itself behind 20-6 with seven minutes to play in the opening 20 minutes, but five points from Rogers, and two apiece from
Kelsi Byrd and
Nevena Markovic brought the Jags within single digits, 23-15, with 3:43 to go.
Down the stretch, Michigan State outscored IUPUI 8-4 to take a 31-19 lead into the half.
Out of the break, IUPUI came out and got the ball inside helping it reduce its deficit to 37-30 following a Maddox lay-up at the 16:21 mark.
The Jags remained within seven with 11:05 to go on a Markovic lay-up, but it went scoreless for three minutes allowing MSU to move its lead back to double-digits, 48-36, with just over eight minutes to go.
IUPUI made one last spurt and closed within eight, 48-40, and had a handful of chances to trim that deficit further, but from the 7:00 mark to the 2:45 mark the Spartans went on a 12-0 run to move their cushion to 60-40.
From that point, Michigan State was able to pull out the 64-45 win.
The Jags shot 39.6 percent from the floor compared to 38.2 percent for Michigan State, but the difference came at the free throw line where MSU outscored IUPUI 19-2.
Up next for the Jags is a match-up with SIU-Edwardsville on Nov. 25, at The Jungle. Tip is set for 7 p.m.
