INDIANAPOLIS – In front of its home fans for the final time during the regular-season, the IUPUI volleyball team was clicking on all cylinders as it took down Western Illinois, 3-0 (25-10, 25-12, 25-19).
The win moved the Jags win streak to double-digits at 10 matches, while upping their overall and Summit League record to 18-11 and 12-2, respectively.
"We did a great job tonight controlling our side of the net," head coach
Steve Payne said. "We did an excellent job serving tonight and that set the tone for us."
Four aces in the early stages of the first set coupled with multiple kills from
Kaitlyn Hickey,
Logan Walling and
Kelly Wachtel catapulted the Jaguars to a double-digit lead at 16-4. Hickey continued to put down kills and the outcome of the first set was never in doubt as IUPUI claimed a 25-10 win. In the opening set, the Jaguars posted more aces (five) than Western Illinois had kills (four).
The momentum continued in set two as the Jaguars sprinted to a 13-5 cushion forcing the Leathernecks to use a timeout. Two kills from Hickey, a block from Wachtel and Walling, and a clever kill from
Alexis Mapes moved to lead to 11 points, 18-7, resulting in the Leathernecks using their second and final timeout of the set. Despite a late run from Western Illinois, a Mapes kill closed out a 25-15 set-two win.
The third set was closer at the start, but a Leathernecks ball handling error and consecutive aces from
Meredith Farkas opened a 10-6 IUPUI advantage. After having its lead grow to seven at 15-8, WIU battled back within four points on three occasions, but each time a Jags kill ended the threat. However, the Leathernecks could not cut its deficit to less than four the rest of the way and kills from Hickey and Fisher down the stretch finished off a 25-19 third-set win.
Hickey finished with a match-high 15 kills and hit at a .448 clip, while Mapes continued her strong play of late with 33 assists and seven digs. The Jaguars collectively hit .315, while holding WIU to a .102 hitting percentage.
A big weekend is on tap for the Jaguars as they hit the road to take on both Denver and South Dakota. IUPUI first heads to Denver for a Friday night tilt that is set to begin at 9 p.m. ET, before making their way to Vermillion, S.D., to take on the Coyotes at 2 p.m. ET on Sunday, Nov. 16.
