BROOKINGS, S.D. –
Kaitlyn Hickey and
Kelly Wachtel combined for 24 of IUPUI's 46 kills leading the IUPUI volleyball team to a 3-0 win over South Dakota State Friday night in Summit League action.
The win was IUPUI's seventh in a row as it improved to 15-11 overall and 9-2 in the conference, while SDSU dropped to 6-22 overall and 0-11 in the league.
Defensively, IUPUI accumulated 61 digs in the three-set win led by
Meredith Farkas' 16. Joining her in double figures were
Beth Howard with 13 and Hickey with 11.
"We did what we needed to do to come out with a win," head coach
Steve Payne said. "The girls held tough at the end of sets two and three to us the win."
In the opening set, IUPUI was able to string together a pair of four-point runs, which proved to be the difference. Leading 11-9, kills from Hickey, Wachtel and
Gabby Fisher coupled with a Jackrabbits error moved the Jaguars in front, 15-9. That lead didn't last long as SDSU responded by taking seven of the next 10 points, but just as that happened IUPUI used another four-point spurt thanks in part to a kill from Farkas and a solo block from
Logan Walling to re-establish a six-point cushion, 22-16. That second push helped the Jags close out a 25-17 opening-set win.
South Dakota State managed to bounce back strong in set two and held a lead as late as 22-20 as it looked to even the match at one set apiece. However, a kill from Farkas preceded a block from Farkas and Walling that evened the score at 22-22. SDSU eventually had set point at 24-23, but an attack error squared things up at 24-24, before another Hickey kill and another late SDSU attack error gave the Jags the 26-24 come-from-behind win.
Walling continued to be a factor both offensively and defensively in the third set as she helped on two blocks and put down two kills early aiding a run that put IUPUI in front, 9-5. The lead wouldn't last long, however, as a five-point Jacks run placed them in front, 13-12. A pair of ties ensued, but SDSU kept the pressure on and expanded its lead to 19-16 forcing the Jags to use their second and final timeout. Out of the timeout, three Jackrabbits errors and two Hickey kills helped IUPUI regain the momentum and seize a 21-20 advantage, forcing a SDSU timeout. From that point, the Jaguars scored the next four points to finish the 25-20 win.
Up next for the Jags is a three-game homestand that begins on Friday, Nov. 7, when they welcome Omaha to The Jungle for a 7 p.m. start.
