MACOMB, Ill. – Behind a season-high 10 aces, the IUPUI volleyball team picked up another Summit League road win Friday night when the Jags earned a 3-0 (25-17, 26-24, 25-20) win over Western Illinois.
IUPUI (11-11; 5-2 Summit) started with five aces in the first set and finished in double figures for the first time this season thanks in part to three players finishing with multiple aces led by
Alexis Mapes' three.
"We did a good job serving to take out of their offense," head coach
Steve Payne said. "Down the stretch, we also did a good job battling for points in sets two and three."
There was a feeling out process in the opening set as both teams jockeyed for the lead, but a lengthy run put IUPUI in control early. With the score tied at seven,
Gabby Fisher started the run with a kill and kills from
Kaitlyn Hickey and
Meredith Farkas coupled with three Leathernecks errors helped the Jags take a 14-7 lead. WIU closed within five, but three more aces down the stretch kept the cushion at a comfortable margin ultimately resulting in the Jaguars taking the opening set, 25-17.
Western Illinois shook off its first-set loss and seized a 7-3 advantage in set two forcing Payne to burn a timeout. The Jaguars settled down and eventually knotted the score at 12-12, but neither team could pull away as nine ties followed before a WIU attack error and a
Logan Walling kill gave the Jaguars two set points at 24-22. Unfortunately, a Leathernecks kill and a Jags attack error spoiled both set points and equaled the score at 24-24. Payne used used his second and final timeout after WIU tied it up and the timeout worked. Farkas dropped a kill in the corner to give IUPUI a third set point and the third time was the charm as a Leathernecks ball handling error secured the 26-24 second-set win.
Out of the break, the Jags captured an early lead and watched it grow to four at 12-8 only to have Western Illinois rally and take a 17-15 lead. IUPUI fought back to tie the score at 20, before
Jessica Helms came into the game and delivered an ace and Farkas put down a kill to catapult the Jaguars on top, 22-20, forcing a WIU timeout. Out of the timeout, the Jags kept their foot on the gas pedal and picked up a block, another Helms ace and a Leathernecks ball handling error to finish off the 25-20 third-set win.
Meredith Farkas led the way with 10 kills, while defensively
Beth Howard posted a team-high 18 digs.
The Jags return home on Sunday, Oct. 19, to kick off a three-match homestand against Summit League leader Denver. Sunday's match is set to start at 1 p.m. at The Jungle.
