Listen LiveFORT WAYNE, Ind. – Coming off a three-set win over South Dakota State on Friday, the IUPUI volleyball team looks to build off that win on Tuesday when it travels to Fort Wayne, Ind., to take on in-state and Summit League rival Fort Wayne.
Two of the last five matches in the series have gone five sets, including the Summit League Tournament semifinal last year in which IUPUI emerged victorious, and if that wasn't enough both teams are 3-2 in league play looking to keep pace with the conference leaders.
"It's always a tough match when we play them, especially on the road and on a weeknight," head coach
Steve Payne said. "Hopefully we can go there and kind of put things together like we did on Friday night and have a good outcome."
Kaitlyn Hickey is coming off an 18-kill performance on Friday night and since conference play started three weeks ago she is averaging 4.29 kps, which ranks fourth in the conference. On the other side of the net, the Jags will have to deal with the top attacker in the league in Fort Wayne's Emily Spencer, who leads the way with 4.94 kps in Summit League-only matches.
On paper, both teams have almost identical statistics in terms of kills per set, assists per set, aces per set and digs per set, but Fort Wayne is the top blocking team in the league with 2.39 bps in conference matches compared to the Jags ranking ninth with 1.38 bps.
The Mastodons lead the all-time series between the two schools, 23-13, with IUPUI winning three of the last five. The home team has won the last six meetings, and the Jaguars are in search of their first road win in the series since Nov. 14, 2008.
